CLI PRAYERS
Talk personally to God, our Heavenly Father, from your heart, following this biblical pattern:
Adoration Praise God for who He is and what He does
Confession Confess your sins to Him daily
Thanksgiving Thank Him for what he has done and will do for you
Supplication Come before Him with your specific prayer requests
Prayer is not asking God for things. Prayer is asking for God! (Matt. 5)
O My King, how many times have you brought Your Word to my heart. You offer what no other can: hope and peace in the midst of my affliction; and the assurance that no matter what things look like, if I will but trust You, You will cause all things to work together for my good and Your glory. My God and my King, I bask in Your faithfulness to me.
Come, Holy Spirit, Come as the fire and burn;
Come as the wind and cleanse;
Come as the light and reveal.
Convict, convert, consecrate;
Until we are wholly Thine! Amen
My Father, enlarge my heart, warm my affections, open my lips, supply words that proclaim “love shines at Calvary”. There grace removes my burdens and heaps them on Your Son made a transgressor, a curse and a sin for me. . . O Father, who spared not Your only Son that You might spare me. . . help me to adore you by lips and life. O that my every breath might be ecstatic praise. (Pilgrim Prayer)
Blessed Lord, we are poor feeble infants, but when we lie on your bosom we feel mighty in Your strength. We are penniless beggars, but when we feast at Your table we would not change our position for the banquets of Esther or the feasts of Solomon (1 Kings 10:5). It is our bliss to be nothing and to find our all in You. Amen. ~ Charles Spurgeon
“You are holy, Lord, the only God, and your deeds are wonderful. You are strong, You are great. You are the most high, You are almighty. You, holy Father, are King of heaven and earth. You are Three and One, Lord God, all good. You are good, all good, supreme good, Lord God, living and true. You are love, You are wisdom. You are humility, You are endurance. You are rest, You are peace. You are gladness, You are justice and moderation. You are riches, and You suffice for us. You are beauty, You are gentleness. You are protector, You are our guardian and defender. You are courage, You are our heaven and our hope. You are our faith, our great consolation. You are eternal life, great and wonderful Lord, God Almighty, Merciful Savior.” ~ Saint Francis of Assisi
“Write your blessed name, O Lord, upon my heart, there to remain so indelibly engraved, that no prosperity, no adversity shall ever move me from your love. Be to me a strong tower of defense, a comforter in tribulation, a deliverer in distress, a very present help in trouble, and a guide to heaven through the many temptations and dangers of this life.” ~ Thomas A Kempis
“O God, you are love. Enable me to live in love just as Christ has loved me. Penetrate my stony heart with your gospel so that I, too, may be kind, tenderhearted and forgiving, even as you forgive me for Jesus sake. Remove all selfishness, bitterness, and arrogance from my heart so that all I say and do might be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Amen.”
“Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart, which no unworthy affection may drag downwards; give me an unconquered heart, which no tribulation can wear out; give me an upright heart, which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow on me also, O Lord my God, understanding to know You, diligence to seek You, and faithfulness that may finally embrace You, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” ~ Thomas Aquinas
Martin Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Martin Luther’s Evening Prayer:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that you would forgive me all of my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who art as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land, who beholds your weak creatures weary of labor, weary of pleasure, weary of hope deferred, weary of self; in your abundant compassion, and fellow feeling with us, and unutterable tenderness, bring us, we pray, unto your rest.
~ Christina Rossetti
Almighty and everlasting God, the Comfort of the sad, the Strength of sufferers, let the prayers of those that cry out of any tribulation come unto Thee, that all may rejoice to find that Thy mercy is present with them in their afflictions.
~ Fifth Century Prayer
Grant, O Lord, that we may live in Thy fear, die in Thy favor, rest in Thy peace, rise in Thy power, reign in Thy glory. ~ ArchbishopLand
Almighty and everlasting God, Who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and are wont to give more than either we desire or deserve, pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those things we are not worthy to ask.
~ Leonine Sacramentary
Speak, Lord, for Thy servant heareth. Grant us ears to hear, eyes to see, wills to obey, hearts to love; then declare what Thou wilt, reveal what Thou wilt, command what Thou wilt, demand what Thou wilt. ~ Christina Rossetti
O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Be with us in our silence and in our speech, in our haste and in our leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening. And give us grace at all times humbly to rejoice in thy mysterious companionship. Hear our prayer. Amen.
The LORD is a Wall of Fire
“For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her”. ~ Zechariah 2:5
“The wall of fire is God’s glorious presence encircling His people and protecting them.”
The Lord is speaking about Jerusalem in this verse. In Hebrews 12:2 we are told we – believers - are citizens of Mt.Zion . . . the heavenly Jerusalem. “As citizens of the city of God, we are assured of the benefits of dwelling in this stronghold. (See Psalm 48:3).
He is also a wall of fire around us today; God’s glorious presence encircling His people.”
Pray for Him to be a Wall of Fire around you individually and around the prison – that His glory will be seen there! AMEN.
HEALTH PRAYER
Almighty God, who art the only source of health and healing, the spirit of calm and the central peace of the universe; grant us Thy children such a consciousness of Thy indwelling presence, as may give us utter confidence in Thee. In all pain, weariness and anxiety, may we throw ourselves upon Thy besetting care, that, knowing ourselves fenced about by Thy loving omnipotence, we may permit Thee to give us health and strength and peace. Give us, too, the daily assurance of Thy forgiveness for our many sins and help us to believe with all our heart on Him who died on Calvary to atone for our sins, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Prayer for the Faithful
May the Strength of God guide us.
May the Power of God preserve us.
May the Wisdom of God instruct us.
May the Hand of God protect us.
May the Way of God direct us.
May the Shield of God defend us.
May the Angels of God guard us.
- Against the snares of the evil one.
May Christ be with us!
May Christ be before us!
May Christ be in us,
Christ be over all!
May Thy Grace, Lord,
Always be ours,
This day, O Lord, and forevermore. Amen. ~St. Patrick
“Thou that has given so much to me, give one thing more – a grateful heart, not thankful when it pleases me, as if thy blessings had spare days; but such a heart
whose every pulse may be Thy praise.” ~ George Herbert
“O Thou full of compassion, I commit and commend myself unto Thee, in whom I am, and live, and know. Be Thou the goal of my pilgrimage, and my Rest by the way. Let my soul take refuge from the crowding turmoil of worldly thoughts beneath the shadow of Thy wings; let my heart, this sea of restless waves, find peace in Thee, O God.” ~ St. Augustine
“O God, early in the morning I cry to you. Help me to pray and to concentrate my thoughts on you: I cannot do this alone. In me there is darkness, but with you there is light; I am lonely, but You do not leave me; I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help; I am restless, but with you there is peace.”
~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“As the rain hides the stars, as the autumn mist hides the hills, as the clouds veil the blue of the sky, so the dark happenings of my lot hide the shining of Thy face from me. Yet, if I may hold Thy hand in the darkness, it is enough. For I know that though I may stumble in my going, Thou dost not fall.” ~ Gaelic Prayer
“Let nothing disturb you; let nothing dismay you; All things pass, God never changes. Patience attains all it strives for. He who has God finds he lacks nothing. God alone suffices.” ~ Teresa of Avila
“Lord, be thou within me, to strengthen me; without me, to keep me; above me, to protect me; beneath me, to uphold me; before me, to direct me; behind me, to keep me from straying; round about me, to defend me.” ~ Lancelot Andrewes
The Valley of Vision
Pilgrim Prayer
LORD, HIGH AND HOLY, MEEK AND LOWLY,
Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
where I live in the depths but see Thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold Thy glory.
Let me learn by paradox
that the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is the healed heart,
that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
that to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
that to give is to receive,
that the valley is the place of vision.
Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen in the deepest wells,
and the deeper the wells the brighter Thy stars shine.
Let me find Thy light in my darkness,
Thy life in my death,
Thy joy in my sorrow,
They grace in my sin,
Thy riches in my poverty,
Thy glory in my valley.
“I am moved today Lord when I think of how completely You will restore everything one day to it’s original created splendor. Until then, my head is often downcast, Lord: I’m ashamed of my sin or cowardice or my foolishness; my head falls because I lose confidence or hope or faith that things will work out. But today, hope rises. I’m reminded that You not only love, save, forgive, redeem, but you lean over to take me in Your arms. You stretch forth Your hands to take my despairing spirit and You hold my head high like an assuring father, like a comforting mother. My heart says Amen, Lord, thank you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.” ~ Jack Hayford, Dick Eastman
“Father in heaven, you have given us a mind to know you, a will to serve you, and a heart to love you. Be with us today in all that we do, so that your light may shine in our lives. We pray that we may be today what you created us to be, and may we praise your name in all that we do. Give us, Lord, a humble, quiet, peaceable, patient, tender and charitable mind, and in all our thoughts, words and deeds a taste of the Holy Spirit. Give us, Lord, a lively faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, a love of you. Take from us all lukewarmness in meditation, dullness in prayer. Give us fervor and delight in thinking of you and your grace, your tender compassion towards us. The things that we pray for, good Lord, give us grace to labor for: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” ~ Sir Thomas Moore
“The shower of answers to your prayers will continue to your dying hour. Nor will it cease then. When you pass out from beneath the shower, your dear ones will step in to it. Every prayer and every sigh which you have uttered for them and their future welfare will, in God’s time, descend upon them as a gentle rain of answers to prayer.” ~ Ole Hallesby
Christ to shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that there may come to me abundance of reward.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
St. Patrick
I am still moving, God,
Through storms.
By your grace –
Over rough country,
You have carried me;
Amidst pounding waves,
You have held me;
Beyond the horizon of my longings
You have shown me your purposes.
Even in this small room, sitting still,
I am moving, God.
Closer.
In silence
I kneel in your presence –
Bow my heart
To your wisdom;
Lift my hands for your mercy.
And open my soul to the great gift:
I am already held
In your arms.
