UNIVERSITY COURSES TAUGHT

Language Study for Literacy Educators

Students are introduced to teaching and learning theories and practices as they relate to language study for literacy educators. Focus on construction of meaning, student-centered responses to reading, print and oral language development, based on the convergences of literacy research.

Mentoring for Educators

This graduate seminar enables educators to develop mentoring, leadership, and decision making skills in three focus areas: (1) mentoring, coaching, and consulting with the school community to develop, implement, and monitor high-quality literacy/biliteracy programs; (2) providing professional development for colleagues; and (3) decision making based on research evidence.

Issues and Problems in Adult Literacy

In-depth exploration of issues and problems in the field of adult literacy.

Psychology of Reading

Psychological and linguistic foundations of the reading processes of beginning and skilled readers; special emphasis on problems of culturally diverse children, comprehension skills, and analysis of relevant research.

Diagnostic Teaching of Reading

Comprehensive study of and clinical practice in the diagnosis of specific, limiting, and complex cases of reading disability/difficulty for students from monolingual or bilingual backgrounds. Offers the opportunity for experience in administering and interpreting batteries of diagnostic tests and in the analysis and synthesis of findings for case studies.

Clinical Reading Laboratory Experience

Laboratory experience for application of concepts, media, and evaluation to meet the needs of disabled readers.

Reading-Writing Workshop

Focus on implementing reading-writing workshop in the elementary or secondary classroom based on current literacy research. Includes the use of multimedia technology and National Standards on English Language Arts. Course delivered to graduate students at distance sites by interactive-video.

Dominican Project Seminar A

The first of two courses designed to fulfill the professional education requirements of the Commonwealth of Dominica Secondary Teachers Training Project. Focal attention given to the role of teachers in reform efforts, change processes, and social and instructional issues.

Dominican Project Seminar B

Course content includes a broad view of the US. public education system (including regular, bilingual, and special education components K-12), specific instructional models, microteaching in a laboratory setting, and field experiences in local schools.

Reading in the Content Fields

An in-depth study of reading and study skills in the different disciplines.

Developmental Reading in the Elementary School

Focal attention given to (a) theoretical perspective on the reading process, (b) contemporary approaches to teaching reading, (c) literacy development of elementary school age children from monolingual and bilingual backgrounds, and (d) literacy instruction in multicultural settings.
