Description of proposal idea and rationale.

(Proposer should present description of proposal idea on this page along with a

rationale for the proposal.)

We propose to reorganize the curriculum in the CTAT program to better align with the needs of related industries and our graduating students both entering the workforce and those transferring to a 4 or 5 year program. Changes to the program include renumbering some of the existing courses to better fit the order which they are taken, realigning the credit and contact hours of several of the classes to take advantage of the efficiencies provided with technology advances, and restructuring of other classes to provide room in the program to expose the students to emerging topics and / or technologies.

In summary, the following changes are being proposed.

1. New COT236 Green Building Principles.

· This course introduces students to principles of green building and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification which will form a basis for further studies in architecture, construction and civil engineering.

· Students would also apply their background knowledge within the workforce. In the architectural, construction and engineering industries, green building principles are part of today’s industry standards.

2. Combine COT238 Construction Estimating and COT239 Construction Scheduling into one class COT240 Construction Estimating and Scheduling.

· This course requires the interpretations of plans and specifications for quantity takeoffs, construction methodology, and cost analysis for a commercial construction project.

· This course will also familiarize the student with the most accepted methods for scheduling a construction project from start to finish.

· Currently the program requires students to take Construction Estimating and Construction Scheduling as separate courses but as co-requisites because the courses work on the same semester long project. Combining the courses not only reduces the program’s credit requirements, but eliminates the redundancies of topics covered in both classes.

· Presently COT 238 and COT 239 are co-requisite courses. If a student fails one of the courses they are required to take both courses again. In addition this course is taught as a single course in four year programs. Once students realize this, they opt to transfer early, prior to graduating because they only need to take one course at the four year institution.

· Students would apply their background knowledge of estimating and scheduling within the workforce.

3. Combine DRF111 Mechanical Drafting and DRF114 AutoCAD1 into DRF112 Technical Drawing / Basic Computer-Aided Drafting.

· This course introduces students to basic hand drafting and computer- aided drafting (CAD) skills fundamental to all areas of engineering and architectural drawing. Included are orthographic projection, pictorial drawing, dimensioning and sectioning practices.

· Currently the program requires students to take Mechanical Drafting and Basic CAD as separate courses. Combining the courses not only reduces the program’s credit requirements, but eliminates the redundancies of topics covered in both classes such as:

Ø orthographic projection

Ø multi-view drawing

Ø section views

Ø centering of views

Ø pictorial views

Ø proper line-type and line-weight designations

· Emphasis would be placed on technical drawing and sketching as opposed to the traditional mechanical drafting which is currently being taught in the program. Students would still gain the basic drawing and visualization skills that they need as required by the industry.

· Students are required to take and pass this course as a prerequisite for all other drafting courses in the program.

· Students who successfully complete this course would still meet entry level requirements for drafting positions with architectural, engineering and construction firms.

4. Change course number COT266 Statics to COT166.

· This course does not have a COT program course prerequisite.

5. Change course name from COT243 Codes and Contracts to COT243 Professional Practices in the Construction Industry.

· Professional Practices in the Construction Industry is more descriptive as a name for this course, because emphasis is not only placed on contracts but on day-to-day operation of a construction contracting business, business ownership, cost estimating and bidding, contract bonds, required types of insurance, construction business methods, labor law and labor relations. Codes and specifications are presented as they apply to the previous subjects.

6. Remove COT246 Structural Steel & Reinforced Concrete Design from the program.

· Even though the CTAT program is an A.A.S. program and is meant for preparing students for the workforce, there are students that do transfer to 4- or 5-year institutions. COT246 does not transfer to other schools.

· This course is typically an upper level division course in four year educational institutions. It is beyond the scope of the two–year college.

· Removal of this course reduces total credits in the CTAT program, which would better align with SUNY total credit recommendations.

7. Remove DRF223 Introduction To 3D Modeling & Animation from the program.

· This course no longer aligns with industry standards and needs. The software 3D Studio Max is no longer typically used by most industries.

· Removal of this course allows room for the program to be restructured with new and combined courses.

· The software 3D Studio Max is a three dimensional modeling program that did not exist in AutoCAD. Three dimensional modeling is now standard in the AutoCAD software we utilize in all the drafting classes.

8. Remove DRF219 Architectural Drafting: Structural from the program.

· Remove DRF219 from the fourth semester in the Construction Technology / Architectural Technology A.A.S. degree but it will remain in the Drafting Certificate program.

This will result in a reduction of credit hours from 72.5 to 63.5

This will result in a reduction of contact hours from 96.5 to 80.5

Comments:

This Letter of Intent reflects major changes since it was first introduced in 2013:

· Total credits required have been reduced to 63.5.

· COT246: Structural Steel & Reinforced Concrete Design has been removed from the program.

· DRF219: Architectural Drafting has been removed from the A.A.S. degree and moved to the Certificate program.

· COT237: Architectural History has been removed from the A.A.S. proposal and moved to the Certificate proposal. Please note: In the A.A.S. degree proposal, removal of COT237 makes room for a required second social science elective. (This change is not referenced in the Letter of Intent, and should be.)

Please proceed with the proposal process by completing a Curriculum Revision Proposal Form. Email the completed proposal form along with an Executive Dean's Acknowledgement of Support Form to Dean Tvelia. After receiving Dean Tvelia’s approval, email the entire proposal packet to the chair of the Ammerman Campus Curriculum Committee, Debra Wakefield.

In the proposal, please provide a rationale for each of the proposed changes. According to the State University of New York, “The most compelling rationale is grounded academically, often arising from the results of ongoing assessment, changes in quality standards, or comparative market information.”

For all new course proposals and for all significantly revised course proposals, please include sample course outlines that contain 15-week topical breakdowns. For courses having both lecture and laboratory components (including COT240), please include topical breakdowns for both components.

For my purposes, separate course revision forms would not be required for identifying the proposed prerequisite changes to the drafting courses; but, be sure to include these changes, in aggregate, on a course revision form to ensure that appropriate changes to Banner can be implemented.

Please include in the proposal the anticipated effective date of discontinuance of the current program by which time all matriculated students will have cleared the program.

This program prepares students for employment in both the architectural, construction and engineering industries. Course covers principles of design, residential and commercial drafting, and related professionals. Graduates can work with Architects, Civil Engineers, or related professionals. Subject matter also includes surveying, site planning, estimating and scheduling, and other technical skills needed for the construction industry. Accordingly, graduates can also assist contractors with project management, estimates and schedules, and on-site problem solving. Among others, potential job titles include the following: architectural drafter, architectural technician, engineering technician, cost estimator, construction project manager, and building product representative.
