HAMPTON WICK INFANT AND NURSERY SCHOOL WASTE POLICY

Introduction

It is important for our Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School community to have an awareness and understanding of the effects of their actions upon the environment in which they live. In order to do this, we need to take responsibility for our own actions as we have a duty to care for the world in which we live. We are an Eco Schools Green Flag school and take our commitment to the environment mindfully. We have a thriving Eco Team who strive to make our school and the world an even better place.

Aims

At Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School we respect our environment and aim to:

Reduce the amount we use and waste.

Reuse materials wherever we can.

Recycle materials whenever possible.

Implementation

Reduce

Energy

• We switch off lights when they are not in use.

• We close outside doors and windows in cold weather.

• We turn off taps when they are no longer needed.

• The Eco Team monitor the amount of energy used.

• We appoint class monitors to ensure these recommendations are carried out.

• We switch off large electrical appliances such as the photocopier and computers at the end of each day.

• We have a water butt to collect water which is used to water our garden and pot plants.

Paper

We will reduce the amount of paper we use in our classrooms by:-

•Writing and printing on both sides of the paper whenever possible.

•Sending information to our school community electronically.

•Ensuring each classroom has a scrap paper drawer for any spare sheets of paper which have only been used on one side.

Transport

• Our School Travel plan promotes travelling to school in a healthy environmentally friendly way to reduce emission levels and congestion.

• We promote walking, scooting and cycling to school through the WOW (Walk once a week) scheme.

• We have secure bike and scooter racks to encourage all staff and children to cycle or scoot to and from school.

• Each year we have safety scooter training to ensure our children scoot safely.

• Each year we hold a ‘Walk to School Week’ with road safety workshops.

Re-use

Food

• We are part of the National Fruit Scheme which provides children with a piece of fruit or vegetable every day.

• Our food waste from lunch and our fruit waste is collected by the council and made into compost.

Gardening

• Our gardening waste is put into our own school compost bin to be used as compost the following year

• Fruit, vegetables and herbs grown in our school garden are sold to our community or used within our school.

Make and Do and paper products

• Children bring in boxes, tubes and containers from home which are used in class for junk modelling.

• Left over strips of paper from the paper cutter is used in classrooms for collage.

• Partially used paper will be re-used within the classroom or during lunch play.

• Envelopes are saved in the office and reused.

Equipment and clothing

• Outdated or unwanted equipment will be offered to others who might have a use for it or collected by the borough recycling scheme.

• Good condition uniform is used as spare changes of clothes or given to children.

• Every term we have an unwanted clothes and shoes collection. These items are then sent to countries less fortunate than us.

• Any old books are given to The Salvation Army to sell on.

• Once a year the ‘Year 2 School Council’ hold a book and toy sale to give unwanted toys and books a new home.

•Unwanted Bric a Brac, books and DVDs are sold yearly at our May Fair. Any leftovers are sent to charity.

Wilderness

• Waste from the ‘Tree bogs’ in our Wilderness keeps our Wilderness area nutritious.

• Much of the timber used to create our pond decking area was reclaimed wood.

• Trees felled during our Wilderness project were cut into logs to line the path and make habitats for creatures.

• Other logs were used to create log piles and stag beetle loggeries.

• Wood chip was used to make the pathways.

Recycle

• Paper and cardboard is collected in blue bags in every class room and office area. This is collected by the Eco Team every Thursday and placed in the large bin for recycling.

•Old batteries are collected and recycled.

•Plastic bottles are collected in a black recycling box.

Respect for our environment

• Children are encouraged to treat all school equipment with respect.

• We have a grounds day every term to keep all our outside areas looking smart.

Impact

• Every year the Eco Team carry out a review of our school and action any outstanding areas.

Success Criteria

We believe that by modelling and promoting awareness and understanding of the effects we are having upon the environment our children will be better equipped to help the environmental challenges which may lie ahead.
