For Fluency

First day:

  1. Have your child read the first passage for just one minute (a “countdown” timer works best). Record the date, title of the story, and number of words your child read under 1st try on the record sheet in the front pocket.
  2. Now have your child read the whole passage with your help (not timed).
  3. Ask you child some questions about the passage from the list of comprehension questions in the front pocket.
  4. Have your child re-read the passage for one minute again starting from the top to see if the number of words increased. Record the second score under 2nd try.
  5. Practice a set of the fluency phrases in the back pocket. These are important to help your child read with ease, sound fluent, and will thus lead to greater comprehension of the passage.

From then on:

  1. Go the passage you worked on yesterday. Have your child re-read that passage for one minute to see if the number of words read in one minute increased. Record the third score for that passage under 3rd try.
  2. Have your child read the next passage for just one minute (a “countdown” timer works best). Record the date, title of the story, and number of words your child read under 1st tryon the next line of the record sheet in the front pocket.
  3. Now have your child read that whole passage with your help (not timed).
  4. Ask you child some questions about the passage from the list of comprehension questions in the front pocket.
  5. Have your child re-read that passage for one minute again starting from the top to see if the number of words increased. Record the second score under 2nd try.
  6. Practice a set of the fluency phrasesin the back pocket. These are important to help your child read with ease, sound fluent, and will thus lead to greater comprehension of the passage.
