Apprentice ReportfromCITB
Area Delivery Manager, Mark Davidson commented “Apprentice recruitment for the Grampian area was good during 2015 and GCT members have again shown a high level of commitment to recruiting new entrants to the industry, however, early indications are that 2016 will be more challenging depending on the situation with the local economy and the Oil and Gas industries.
The Challenge for the GCTG members in 2016 may be to support existing apprentices in order to keep them in employment or to offer places for those who find themselves out of work.”
- Training Review 2015
GCT continue to source best value training from Training Providers, these costs are passed onto members and a further subsidy is available by way of an additional grant from the CITB of £25,000. This was distributed throughout all members by offering a 20% discount on all courses. An excellent working capital was also available to the Group and this was also tapped into by approx. £5k.
A cap of £2500 worth of subsidised training to each member was introduced by CITB in 2015 and this was monitored by both GCT administration and CITB. A couple of member companies did go over this allowance but this was subsidised by cashflow. (Bancon, Chap and Wm Donald Ltd)

- Proposed Training Courses for 2016
GCT will continue to provide training courses as per 2015 and would like to introduce more managerial/supervisory courses. A challenge for 2016 will be ensure Scaffold courses are still running in Aberdeen as our preferred supplier has unfortunately decided to cease training. We also are keen to find out more information regarding the proposed Scaffold Academy/Training Centre for the North East.
- Proposals for2016
Group members will continue to receive invitations to meet together at least twice a year to raise local issues and share best practise. Directors will continue to meet on a quarterly basis.
In 2015 GCT was invited to a Construction Industry Development Forum meeting at Aberdeen City Council which allow us to distribute information around the Group members. We will continue to attend this meetings throughout 2016.
GCT will continue to liaise with CITBand provide members with information, updates and advice on all training matters and CITB will encourage GCT to strive towards the following outcomes:
- Increase group membership, with particular emphasis on SME’s.
- Increase the amount of training being undertaken by the group to help achieve group targets and increase the location of courses being run within the area.
- Foster closer Industry/Education links to improve quality and quantity of recruits available in the area, by providing a vehicle for Careers & Education to have contact with industry.
- Encourage member companies to continue to carry out a training needs analysis to identify their training requirements which will help the group Training Officer and administrator set up necessary courses.
- Encourage member companies to complete quarterly questionnaires to feedback information to CITB.
