Primary PE Sports Premium Report 2015-2016

Background:

The government has provided additional funding to primary schools in order to improve provision in physical education and sport. The money is ring-fenced and the school will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding and the impact that this has had on pupils’ participation and progress.

Allocation: £9830

Objectives:

  • increase participation in sport, regardless of children’s abilities
  • to broaden the range of extra-curricular opportunities available to our children
  • to increase staff confidence in teaching PE and sport by providing access to high quality training opportunities
  • to subsidise activities for families experiencing financial difficulties
  • increase opportunities for children to participate in tournaments and inter-school competitions
  • to ensure that disadvantaged children have opportunities to participate in extra curricular sports activities.

Action:

  • The drive to broaden opportunities for children to participate in competitive sports, regardless of their ability has continued. The school’s PE leader and Sports Coach organise coaching for children at lunchtime on two days each week. Children of all abilities have had opportunities to represent St Mary’s at inter-school matches and tournaments.
  • Two sports coaches are members of the lunchtime supervisory team and they target children who need to build confidence; who do not otherwise participate in sport or who need support for social skills development. They provide half-termly formal feedback on children’s progress. All pupils eligible for Pupil Premium participate in these lunchtime sessions.
  • Membership of the Bromley School Sports Partnership and participation in borough competitions. An example of this is the biannual cross country tournament at Crystal Palace with representation from 85+ St Mary’s KS2 children.
  • Employment of specialist PE coaches in curriculum time.
  • Employing coaches to provide breakfast and after-school sports clubs (e.g. gymnastics, multiskills and cricket).
  • Subsidy for swimming lessons for Year 4.
  • Hiring specialist sports coaches to work alongside staff for short PE modules.
  • Cover for staff to attend training and to accompany children to competitions.
  • Release cover for the PE leader to monitor standards of learning and teaching in PE.
  • Release cover for the PE leader to audit participation in sports and to identify children who need to be targeted for activities.
  • Purchasing equipment as relevant.

Impact:

The impact of the Sports Premium funding is measured as part of our self-evaluation and provision mapping arrangements.

  • Lesson observations of PE lessons showed teaching to be consistently good and often outstanding.
  • It was a crucial element of our successful bid for the Healthy Schools London Silver Award. St Mary’s is in the final stages of submitting an application for the Gold Award and PE provision has been fundamental to this.
  • An audit of extra-curricular sport participation showed that 85% of children at St Mary’s attend at least one sports club each week.
  • The number of sporting activities increased, during and outside the school day.
  • The boys’ and girls’ football teams have enjoyed considerable success at both borough and county level.
  • The impact of the lunchtime sports provision has had a positive impact on pupils’ attitudes to sport and to inclusion.
