Akins HSSummer Reading Project (Summer 2015)

All students will be responsible for reading during the summer. You do not have to consider the lexile of the book(s), however, it must be appropriate for high school readers. The topic, the title, the author, the lexile – whatever you read is up to YOU.

You will #1: READ, #2: Complete 12 entries on a reading log, & #3: QUIZ over a book in the first few weeks of school. The points due are based on your grade level, as shown below:

Students going into 10th grade – You must quiz*** on your book(s) and earn at least 20 points.

Students going into 11th grade– You must quiz*** on your book(s) and earn at least 25 points.

Students going into 12th grade – You must quiz*** on your book(s) and earn at least 30 points.

***If there is no quiz for the book, you must write a 30 question quiz to turn in, with the answer key. (Read more below.)

#1 – READ 1-3 books, depending on the amount of points you need. You can choose ANY book(s) you would like to read (including electronic books)! But, first, check to see if it already has points.

Here’s how to look up books to find out how many points it is worth:

  1. Google “Scholastic Reading Counts” and click on the link that says “Book Expert” (Or if you opened this from the website, hold down CTRL + click here.)
  2. Type in the name of the title in the blue area that says “Find Books Supported By SRC! Quizzes” search bar to the top left of the webpage. Be exact when you type it in. (If you are having trouble, try searching by author by opening the pull down menu.)
  3. If the book does not come up, it does not have points. All you have to do is make a quiz by coming up with thirty questions as you read. Make sure you also underline the correct answer. Try not to make them too obvious but you also don’t want to pick details that are really hard to remember.

For example, this is a good example of a Reading Counts question:

  1. Why does Susan spit at Cathy?

a)Cathy kissed her boyfriend.

b)Cathy made her laugh so hard she spit.

c)Susan was dared to do it by John.

d)Cathy spit at her first and she was only retaliating.

#2 - AFTER you read, you need to complete 12 entries on the Summer Reading Log (also on the website).

#3 – When you get back to school, you will QUIZ over your book and turn in your Reading Log. The points you earn are going towards a MAJOR Grade: The Summer Reading Projectgrade. You will STILL HAVE POINTS DUE for the 1st six weeks that are SEPERATE from this grade.

Example Reading Response:

Reading Response #1 Date: 6/10/15 Pages: 1-45

Reading Response Question/Statement:“The main character’s conflict is... and I know this because the text/character says…”

______

Response:The main character’s conflict is that he doesn’t know how to tell his best friend that he’s in love with her. This is man vs. self because he’s struggling with what to do, what to think, and what to say, which is an internal struggle. I know this because he says, “It’s like I’ve loved her my whole life and never knew it. But what if she’s never known it? What if she never will?”
