Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to teach the student to understand and perform computations involving vectors, matrices, and systems of linear equations.

Course Topics or Content: 1. Systems of linear equations; 2. Matrices, matrix algebra 3. Determinants, eigenvalues, diagonalization; 4. Vectors in two and three dimensions. Planes, hyperplanes; 5. Vector spaces, basis. (For complete detail see the course Web Page).

Teaching Methods: A combination of lectures, class and lab exercises, along with homework and projects will prepare the students for quizzes and tests.The properties of geometrical vectors in two and three dimensions will be used to motivate similar results in higher dimensions. Systems of equations will be studied in terms of lines, planes, and hyperplanes. Dot and cross products, and determinants will be used extensively. The CAS's Maple will be introduced and used in the course. Student projects will illustrate the use of these ideas and techniques in current technologies.

Evaluation Procedures and Breakdown of Marks: The final mark is the higher of the two marks computed via the Marking Schemes A and B.

Attendance:You are responsible for all work, even if you are absent. Attendance will be monitored. If you miss a test, you mustprovide a doctor’s note. All electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops etc. must be turned off upon entering class.
