Trainee role description and Person Specification

Title / Heritage Skills Trainee
Reporting to / Building on the Past Placement Supervisor
Location / Lincoln Cathedral Works Department
Hours / Standard hours 0800 to 12.15 and 13.00 to 16.45 Monday to Thursday, and 0800 to 12.15 and 13.00 to 15.30 on Friday (38.75 hours per week) for 18 months attracting a training bursary of £13,000 per annum tax-free. The traineeship requires flexibility and it will be necessary to participate some weekends and evenings.
Period of training / 18 months, starting in June 2014
Holidays / 22 working days per annum, plus statutory public holidays.

Purpose of the Traineeship

Building on the Past is a 5-year project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund which aims to increase the number and diversity of people with skills in stonemasonry, joinery, lead work, heritage brickwork, heritage painting and decorating and glazing and to enhance awareness of heritage skills in the local community. Additional funding was granted for the second phase of recruitment, increasing the number of traineeships to 16 over the 5 years of the project to train craftspeople in the heritage skills of stonemasonry, joinery, lead work, heritage brickwork, heritage painting and decorating, and glazing. Trainees will be based at Lincoln Cathedral Works Department. Trainees will undertake work-based projects at the Cathedral and other sites in uphill Lincoln and gather evidence to achieve a level 3 NVQ in heritage skills.

Who is the Traineeship in Heritage Painting and Decorating aimed at?

This traineeship represents an outstanding opportunity to train the next generation of skilled crafts people. This traineeship is aimed at people who already have a degree of competency to level 1 or 2 in decorative finishing, painting and decoration gained through achieving qualifications or through practical experience. Examples of level 2 equivalence include 5 GCSEs A*-C,or level 2 in painting and decorating. We are particularly interested in attracting applications from people who are currently under-represented in this workforce such as women, people from black and minority ethnic communities or people with disabilities.

We are keen to attract people seeking to change career including those who have caring responsibilities. We are able to provide a contribution to essential childcare expenses for those for whom access to care may be a barrier to training. We will offer additional support and guidance to promising candidates who may not meet the trainee specification

This is part of the third recruitment phase, which started in January 2014

Previously traineeships were available in:

For the first phase, in February 2011:

  • 1 traineeship in masonry;
  • 1 traineeship in heritage joinery;
  • 1 traineeship in leadwork.

For the second phase, in May 2012:

  • 1 traineeships in masonry;
  • 2 traineeships in heritage joinery;
  • 2 traineeships in lead work;
  • 1 traineeship in heritage brickwork;
  • 1 traineeship in glazing.

For this third phase, January 2014:

  • 1 traineeship in masonry;
  • 1 traineeship in heritage brickwork;
  • 2 traineeships in heritage joinery;
  • 1 traineeship in heritage painting and decorating;
  • 1 traineeship in glazing.

Outcomes from training

Trainees will be expected to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which includes a reflection on past learning and achievement, identifies future career paths, and plans a programme to learning to achieve this. The ILP will include a mapping of NVQ Heritage skills units and other learning activities which are identified. The outcomes will be:

Achievement of level 3 NVQ in Heritage Skills specialist route

Increased skills and knowledge

Experience of real work on iconic grade 1 listed buildings

Examples of projects to include on CV and in future job applications

The key activities

To carry out conservation work with support and training from experienced crafts people to required standards of work, efficiency and quality expected by Lincoln Cathedral

To gain experience of conservation in order to meet the outcomes in the NVQ Level 3 in Heritage Skills specialist route as agreed with your mentor

To take responsibility for your own learning and development by creating your Individual Learning Plan and updating it on a weekly basis

To be an active participant in the regular trainee seminar programme

To participate in other learning opportunities as agreed with your placement supervisor including assisting in delivering taster courses and skills demonstrations

To ensure that all work is undertaken in line with Cathedral policies and practices

Person Specification

You will be over the age of 18 and be able to confirm that you are eligible to work and study in the UK. You will need to successfully complete an occupational health assessment. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate the potential to become expert craftspeople, who will take responsibility for their own learning and personal development and who are committed to pursuing a career in the heritage sector in the UK.

ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
Education and training
Evidence of competency to NVQ level 1 or 2, or equivalent experience in decorative finishing, painting and decorating or related subject area / Functional or key skills qualifications to level 2 in English, maths and ICT

The recruitment process is organised in 3 stages as follows:

Candidates not long listed, will be offered an opportunity to participate in taster courses at The Skills Centre
Stage 2 / Long listed candidates invited to attend an interview with a panel. Appropriate provision will be made for any candidate with disabilities to enable these candidates to compete on an equal basis.Interviews on 3 June 2014
Candidates will be assessed against the person specification and a short list drawn up
Short listed candidates notified and invited to attend for further selection event
Unsuccessful candidates offered feedback and opportunity to have an individual guidance session to support future application
Stage 3 / Short listed candidates attend selection eventwhere they will complete a task which assesses their aptitude for work in the occupational area. Appropriate provision will be made for any candidate with disabilities to enable these candidates to compete on an equal basis
Successful candidates notified and offered a Traineeship pending take up of references, submission of qualification/experience evidence and completion of occupational health assessment
Unsuccessful candidates offered feedback and opportunity to have an individual guidance session to support future application
Candidates accepting the offer provided with information pack about joining the scheme

When you complete the application form you are encouraged to give examples of how you demonstrate these criteria. If you are long listed you will have further opportunities to demonstrate how you achieve the criteria through participating in an interview and if short listed, participating in a task.

The short listed interview is an opportunity to give further evidence and examples of how you meet the person specification. The interview will be with a panel and will last approximately 30 minutes. The task will be relevant to painting and decorating traineeship applied for
