Minutes of June 24, 2008 Meeting

President Fred called the meeting to order @ 7:01 PM. Due to many issues to be discussed, one garage tour this evening after the meeting, to Sheldon and Warren Weinert’s home. Directions will be given along with maps. Please watch out for one area of the road that is being reconstructed and Sheldon asked that all people park their vehicles diagonally on the right side of the lawn.

There were no guests this evening.

Fred asked if there were any errors or omissions for the minutes of the May 27, 2008 meeting and none was indicated. The minutes were M/S by Ken Johnston and Mike Van Grondelle, carried.

Wayne Oscvirk gave the treasurers report. Wayne gave a breakdown of all income and expenses incurred since the May meeting as well as the most current bank balance. M /S by George Dwernychuk and John Boehmer. Wayne motioned for receipt of his report and it was accepted.

Dave Ballantyne was not present this evening to give the auditor’s report of our 2007 books. It will be presented at a later date.

Correspondence at the front table this evening: thank you letter via Jim and Pam Smith from the Cosmopolitan Court Social Club for bringing some vehicles out Thursday June 19 to their facility for the residents to enjoy. There was an additional note included from Alice McDonald, vice president of the social club, apologizing to all vehicle owners for not arranging a complimentary supper for them. Per Jim Smith’s comments it was a very good meal and there was a very beautiful area to park all vehicles on the grass. There were copies of the SAAAC quarterly. Ray Fribance noted that this publication is something everyone should look at as it has quite a lot of information regarding all aspects of the old car hobby. Ray Fribance and Sheldon Weinert will meet and will put together a report of the SAAAC meeting they attended Sunday June 15. Their report on all information gathered at this SAAAC meeting will be given at a later date. There was a tentative draft letter of the Scattered Spokes tour to be held Friday August 15 to Sunday August 17 in Davidson and area. Jim Ewert spoke about this upcoming tour also. Final tour draft and registration forms will be available in July. Jim also spoke about a new powder coating company opened up by a young couple in Muenster. It is called MPC – Muenster Powder Coating & Design run by Dan and Jan Sylvestre. Jim and Bill Ewert recently had some antique auto rims done there and the workmanship was very good and prices reasonable. They feel good about recommending this company. Received a letter from the downtown Partnership about the annual CKOM Cruise weekend in August and holding our usual area for club parking. Received a small ad from Michener Allan auctions in Calgary inviting everyone to attend their auction to be held Saturday July 26 at 4:00 PM 13090 Barlow Trail N.E. Phone # 403-229-0405 or 877-811-8855 for consignments or information. There were also copies of the latest Old Autos newspapers, applications for various tours in and around our area, copies of the club bylaws, auto events calendar for 2008 and NAAACCC membership cards.

President’s report: Nothing to report this evening due to shortened meeting.

INTERNATIONAL TOUR - Tonight’s regular SAAC meeting will be the last one prior to this event taking place starting Thursday June 26. Norm Mowles, on Gene Searcy’s behalf, thanked the Valley Cruisers car club for stepping up and taking car of the overnight parking security during this event. Norm also stated he still had two openings on this security detail that would require filling. Jim Lauritzen and George Dwernychuk quickly volunteered to fill the open spots. Norm will also be picking up Wednesday June 25 the passes for the complimentary Sunday June 29 brunch sponsored by and held at the Dakota Dunes. Ray Fribance stated single tickets were available tonight for the Saturday June 28 banquet if anyone not registered would like to go. The tickets are $30.00 each and tonight will be the last time they will be available as all banquet attendee numbers must be into the hotel on Wednesday June 25. If you have paid for banquet tickets previously please see Ray tonight to pick them up. Ray also said he would like to have someone with a van to assist him to take a number of boxes and items such as tour centerpieces, placemats, tablecloths, goodie bags, etc to the Saskatoon Inn Thursday June 26 in the morning. Jim Smith volunteered to help on his “day off”. Goodie bags will also be available after the event for $10.00 each while quantities last. All will contain a whole host of items from the tour. Ray discussed the placemats for the banquet, there will be one using an advertisement for the Derby car which was assembled in Saskatoon in the twenties and the other will be a collage of photos of all participants’ vehicles done by Howard Titman. The table centerpieces, done by Lorraine’s Floral in Sutherland, will also be given away to lucky winners chosen by a secret method Saturday night. Ray Fribance gave a tour itinerary. The Mustang Club will be assisting with parking Friday evening on 21st Street for the Jazz Festival show & shine. Luc Vangool asked for more volunteers to assist with the parking Friday to help the six Mustang club members doing it. Would like people there starting around 2:30 PM. This help is needed because the city will not be hooding the meters but will have barricades there to be erected to keep unauthorized parking out. This way there will be open spots for tour entrants. If people not registered for the tour would like to bring their cars out Friday evening to fill all spots available on 21st Street between Spadina Crescent and 2nd Avenue it would be greatly appreciated. Ray Graves would like to see twenty people signed up tonight so towards that end the previous list of 6 people who were volunteering for tour duties circulated in May was sent around again. Ray F showed the 28 page tour booklet that Howard has put many long hours into its creation. This booklet is included in the tour goodie bag. John Boehmer asked again if any SAAC members who were registered for this tour could see him about being a leader car for various venue tours over the two day event. He will also require a couple more people to help line up cars at the hotel each morning prior to the day’s tours. This would take place at 8:30 AM sharp so the tours could leave for the various venues at 9:00 AM. Jim Berg asked if the leader cars will be used to take entrants from the WDM to the Friday show & shine. He was told this will be something to be worked out soon. BARN PLAYHOUSE TICKETS- Some of the tickets previously sold at the May meeting has the date of September 3 on them. All tickets were to be for the “opening night” of Wednesday August 27. Wayne Oscvirk asked everyone who bought tickets to check yours so we will all be going on the right night. The Barn Playhouse has been forthcoming and will correct all problems with any wrong dated tickets. Wayne will also contact all purchasers so there will be no problems.

PION-ERA @ THE WDM- Saturday July 12 and Sunday July 13. Fred said there will no volunteers needed to flip burgers but there is a need for people to look after the “cowboy coffee” area. This will require 2 hour shifts and a sign up sheet was passed around for people to volunteer to cover all shifts. There will also be a designated area for us to display our cars and the museum would like us to enter our vehicles in the day ending “parade of power” at around 4:15 PM each day. Fred sent a second sign up sheet around for people to fill in for the car display / parade of power.

Fred reminded all executive members that the July executive meeting would be held Monday July 7 not Tuesday July 8 as usual.

ELECTRIC GARAGE CAR AUCTION FRIDAY AUGUST 22 & SATURDAY AUGUST 23- Lloyd Minion spoke about this at the May meeting. It was duly voted on that evening that we should enter into an agreement to assist this company in various duties for a considerable honorarium. Lloyd said tonight that the auctions held in Winnipeg and Kelowna recently had poor sales. Due to this the Saskatoon auction for this year has been cancelled. The Electric Garage had an aggressive growth strategy but it has not worked out in these untested areas whereas their other auctions in Alberta have been quite successful. The Electric Garage has committed to Saskatoon next year. This year for Saskatoon even with extensive advertising there had only been 2 cars consigned. There will be a Calgary auction July 11 and 12. Lloyd asked if there were any questions and there was none.

SAAC SHOW & SHINE & SAFETIES / EUGENE OLSON’S TOUR- Many thanks to Elaine and Norm Mowles for setting up the May tour and for hosting the June 1st BBQ following the SAAC show & shine. Norm said the Eugene Olson auction brought in quite a good sum for sales. Some vehicles sold well but one wrecker bought 200 cars and another 400 cars. After hearing the problems with the Winnipeg and Kelowna Electric Garage auctions and the Eugene Olson scenario Bill Fraser related a story of an auction where a gentleman took a bit of a bath on a high priced car and it is most likely due to the market being soft right now.

SAAC BURSARY RECIPIENT- The bursary this year is awarded to Kelsey Bloomquist. He is currently upgrading his course work to enter the electrical program at SIAST Kelsey campus. He is only one of 15 students graduating from City Park this year per Dave Sloboda’s email. Dave also said everyone at the school greatly appreciates this annual bursary. Fred attended the banquet on Monday June 23 for the graduates and made the award presentation.

There was a discussion on club jackets. There has been a perceived concern over jacket styles and materials such as leather, melton/leather or nylon, etc. When all gathered this evening were asked if there was any opposition over what type of jacket a member may purchase all agreed there is no problem. As long as the jacket is in club colours anything else goes. If you wish to purchase a club jacket please see Paul Collyer at his company Express-It 2505 Koyl Avenue in the airport industrial area. PARKRIDGE CENTRE- Lloyd Minion gave a bouquet to all people who attended this event Monday June 16 and allowed staff and residents from the long term care facility to appreciate your vehicle. Lloyd also thanked Gail Graves for assisting Herb Essenburg, who is blind, to tour all vehicles present describing the vehicle in detail for him. Herb will also be playing background music at the Thursday June 26 International Tour registration night. Gail will also be guiding Herb and describing vehicles at the Friday June 27 evening show & shine.

Fred reminded everyone that when we go to the Berry Barn after the July meeting that the kitchen closes at 8:00 PM. You will only be able to purchase desserts such as pie and ice cream. Please keep this mind when you go there in July.

There has been some confusion over the dates the SAAAC tour will be held in North Battleford. It will take place Thursday July 17 to Sunday July 20. The cost will be $20.00 per person.

MEMBER NAME TAGS- Ray Fribance has some new ones as well as old ones not picked up. He read out the names on the tags he has to see if anyone was present this evening to pick them up. He also has a list of new members who require a tag to be made. If you don’t have one perhaps Ray has it or will need to put you on the list for a new one.

Glenn Hoff spoke about Super Run to be held on the August long weekend. The organizing committee is looking for volunteers to assist with parking. Please give your name to Glenn if you can help and he will pass it on to the proper person at Super Run.

50/50 draw was won by Ken Johnston (same as May meeting). The amount was $34.00.
