“Dual training”
The following lists have been compiled from the training experiences of SpRs and ST4-6 trainees currently undertaking dual training in child & adolescent and forensic psychiatry.
The list of “core training posts” refers to the main posts that are usually done for 6 or 12 months. Clearly there is not enough time (even in dual training!) to work full time in all of these posts – but many could be taken up as special interest sessions. There is also a separate list of specific special interest sessions, other experiences that trainees have found interesting or useful, and a list of other academic qualifications trainees have pursued. These lists are not intended to be any sort of proposal or recommendation for a curriculum, but rather to inform individuals who are currently in training or considering work in this subspecialty.
With traditional dual training schemes, trainees would do “two years forensic, two years CAMHS, then one final year of adolescent forensic psychiatry”. At present, however, it appears that such schemes are not available and individuals are applying for each part of higher specialist training independently, via the usual route of competitive entry. In September 2009, 12 members had child & adolescent and forensic listed as a CCT, whilst 91 members had child & adolescent and forensic listed as a specialty.
Please see the SIG website for more information on dual training, including an update from Dr Ollie White (in “Introduction to the Executive Committee”) and the letter entitled “Dual Training in Psychiatry” by Prof Howard, Dean of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
