Cell Model Project DUE September 12/13

Your goal is to build a model of a cell. You will use the supplied materials to represent each organelle of the cell. For any supply you choose to use you must have a reason relating to the function of the organelle. For example, one can choose to use a yellow pom pom ball to represent the mitochondria because the mitochondria makes energy and the pom pom ball is yellow like the sun, which also provides energy.

There are four parts to this project. In part 1 you will do research on the function of the organelles. Then in part 2 you will choose the materials for your model and explain why you have chosen the materials you have. In part 3 you will build your model. And in part 4 you will create a presentation explaining your model.

Part 1: Cell Research

Using the CellsAlive Website (click here) and the Icell Website (click here) complete research on the following:

○ Determine which cell the organelle is present in record your answer in the second and third column.

○ Determine the function of each organelle. Review both websites when writing your function. (You should not write down everything that is on the website but rather put the function into your own words.)

Organelle / Present in
Plant Cell
(yes or no) / Present in
Animal Cell (yes or no) / Function
Cell Wall
Cell Membrane
Ribosome
Cytoplasm
Chloroplast
Lysosome
Golgi Complex
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Nucleus
Mitochondria
Vacuole

I am building a PLANT or ANIMAL cell (Circle one)

Make sure to include organelles for your cell.

Part 2: Model Planning

Determine the materials that you will use in your model. Write the material you plan to use in the second column, include a picture of the material. And in the third column write why you choose the material. The reason needs to be written in the following form:

The (organelle) is like the (Material) because (relationship between the two materials)

Ex: The Mitochondria is like the yellow pom pom ball because the Mitochondria makes energy and the pom pom ball is yellow like the sun, which also provides energy.

Organelle / Material Used / Why using material?
Cell Wall
Cell Membrane
Ribosome
Cytoplasm
Chloroplast
Lysosome
Golgi Complex
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Nucleus
Mitochondria
Vacuole

Part 3: Build your model

Using the materials you picked out build your Model.

Part 4: Presentation of model

Create a powerpoint explaining your choice in materials for the organelles. For each organelle, you need to include the following:

○ Identify the organelle

○ Identify the material

○ Picture of the organelle

○ Picture of your material

○ Explanation for how your material relates to the function of the organelle

○ Bonus: Application to real world. What would happen if there were less or more of a certain organelle? (mitochondria – athletes have more, what does this mean? Feel free to choose any organelle)

Step 1: Create a powerpoint that meets the requirements described above

Step 2: Save the powerpoint to your desktop.

Step 3: Go to the website: edmodo.com

Step 4: Log in using your group code (provided by Ms. Flores).

Step 5: Click on “assignment” under your login name

Step 6: Click on “Upload”

Step 7: Select the powerpoint from your desktop and click “open.”
