THE COMMISSION OF THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION

FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

PREAMBLE:

By action of the General Convention of 1958 the Episcopal Church Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS) created the Episcopal Seminary of the Caribbean whose objective was to offer Superior Theological Education to the clergy and lay leaders in formation in the Episcopal Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Seminary opened its doors in 1961 in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Although with this ample name, not all the dioceses of the area used the services of this center, since dioceses like in Brazil, Mexico and the Churches of the Southern Cone had possibilities of theological education.

Due to the closing of the Episcopal Seminary of the Caribbean in 1976, for financial reasons, the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church established with the funds of the sale of the properties “the Theological Education Fund for Latin America and the Caribbean”.

With the interests generated by these funds, it was agreed to support the programs of theological formation of the dioceses that used the Episcopal Seminary of the Caribbean to train their leaders.
