Dear Dolphins
Happy New Year - I hope that you all had a fantastic festive season that involved late mornings, friends, family, fun and, of course, mountains of delicious food! Although the holidays are over (well, for the non-students, anyway), the fun at the Dolphins swimming sessions seems set to continue, and with many Masters swimming events coming up, there shouldn’t be time for anyone to feel sorry for themselves…
This newsletter, prompted by a near hysterical phone call from Mairi this morning, contains lots of NB information. So, unless you wish the full wrath of the Masters PRO committee member to descend upon your head, please take careful note of the material contained within the next few pages.
GALA @ MALMESBURY THIS WEEKEND
Saturday, 25th January
14:30
According to Mairi, the only Dolphin to have entered, thus far, is “stalwart” Gary Freeling. Don’t leave the poor man alone out there… It’s the first gala of the new year and everyone is a bit heavier and slower, so, if you’re afraid to race because of all the extra Christmas pudding: don’t be! You’re not alone in being just a little bit unfit. The pool is 5om long, and there will be touch pads in place – good for those training for WP Champs. In anticipation of the hordes of Dolphins streaming out Malmesbury, to race and then braai (bring your family along for the day), I’ve included directions to the pool (courtesy Mairi):
Take the N7 to Malmesbury from Cape Town. (Remember to take the Ratanga Junction off ramp!! Otherwise you will have to turn back)
Do not take the first turn off into Malmesbury, but carry on going a further 1,5km (where you will pass the golf course on your left). Then take the second turn off into Malmesbury, where you will loop back over the N7.
You will now be at the top end of town heading back down a long steep hill, called Voortrekker Road. Carry on for approx. 1,5km until you hit the first set of traffic lights. Turn left at the robots into Vrede Street and the pool is first left again. If you have any problems you can phone Sharon on 082 370 2007 or Steve on 082 851 1130.
Mairi has already sent out the entry forms – the entries must be in (to Judy Brewis) by Thursday at the latest.
WELCOME to new Dolphins members Bronwen Ferraz and Rita Terblanche.
If any new members need Dolphins costumes, caps etc. please phone Nadine Foster: (021) 689 4620.
While we gladly welcome the new Dolphins members, we also note with sadness the passing of an old Masters swimmer. Colin Cable passed away two weeks ago at the age of 92. Our sincere condolences go to his family and friends.
The dates for the WP CHAMPS are as follows:
1. SUNDAY 16 FEBRUARY10:00Paarl South Pool, Paarl
2.TUESDAY 25 FEBRUARY18:30 Newlands Pool.
3.THURSDAY 27 FEBRUARY18:30 Newlands Pool.
Entry forms coming soon!

Yes, this event is drawing ever closer and, if you are still not inspired to get into a costume, is a major incentive to get training again! The following have indicated to Mairi that they are coming. If you would like to come, but have not let Mairi know, please do so ASAP.

Entries for Nationals have to be in Durban by the 14th February. (They've given us an extra week). They must go to Mairi first for signature, and who will then send them in a batch. (She will fill in your SSA No. so don’t panic) Entries to Nationals must be with Mairi by Thursday 6th February and there will be no exception to this cut-off date.
(More) Nationals stuff…
Do you want to go to Durban and officiate but not swim? That's cool too as they are looking for officials, timekeepers etc. Let Mairi know, please, if your aunt is coming with you and if she can time-keep.
NATIONALS KIT
Yes, you can still order kit for Nationals! They have extended the deadline for orders until the 24 January, which will definitely be the cut off date. Details of the available kit are in the SAMS NEWS, so if you still want to order something, go for it!

DOLPHINS KIT
When one belongs to an elite training squad such as Dolphins, one has to look the part. Do you need any Dolphins kit? Nadine Foster has everything you need to create a magnificent first impression at Nationals. On offer are costumes, caps, polar fleece sweatshirts, backpacks, sun hats… Order this minute if you hope to have it in time for the big event in Durban. Please phone Nadine now to see what she can still manage to get for you. We have been lucky enough to get a fashion tip for the month from our very own club fashion consultant, Ms Brimble, who says, “WE MUST ALL SWIM IN OUR DOLPHIN COSTUMES, AND WE NEED TO CO ORDINATE OUR "LOOK" FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHS.”
Congratulations
To Didi Petit and Rob Knutzen who married in a little stone church in Paternoster on 2nd January. I have been promised a photograph, so watch this space…

Finally, Valentines Daylooms on the horizon, in honour of which I have included the following:
One Perfect Rose
A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet –
One perfect rose.
I knew the language of the floweret;
“My fragile leaves,” it said, “his heart enclose.”
One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet
One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it’s always just my luck to get
One perfect rose.

Any aspirant poets out there? Send your offerings (good or bad, naughty or nice) this way and I’ll gladly include them in the next newsletter.
Happy swimming
