Book and Supply List for Chieftain Institute 2016-2017
Please note that parents purchase all student books with only a few exceptions. With our wonderful ability to order books from great homeschool catalogs and Amazon, you can easily purchase the needed textbooks. Books may also be ordered directly through the publishers. Many parents also buy/sell their used Chieftain Institute textbooks at the end of the year at our Open House, but if that is the case, please make sure you are purchasing the correct book and edition we will be using the next year.
Physical Science
Exploring Creation with Physical Science, 2nd edition, published by Apologia Only the student textbook needs to be purchased, not the separate booklet with the tests and answer keys. There is also the option of purchasing a companionCD-Rom (not the text on CD) as enrichment for the students.
Biology
Biology, 2010, by Miller and Levine.Published by Prentice Hall, a division of Pearson.Only the student textbook is needed.Make sure the book has a red macaw on the front, and is theON LEVELversion (there are other levels for students who struggle with reading). Amazon sells new and used copies and even rents the textbook.
Chemistry

Conceptual Physics, 9th edition, by Paul Hewitt. ISBN 978-321052025. The cover has an ocean scene with a sunrise or sunset on it.

Precalculus
Precalculus with Limits: A Graphing Approach (5th ed.)by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards, published by Houghton Mifflin.This is a newer edition of the book than we have used in the past; the version we are now using isISBN 978-0-618-85152-2. The complete solutions manual must also be purchased, the ISBNis 978-0618854479.Students are also required to purchase the note taking guide that accompanies this book. Chieftain has bought these in bulk and they are $5. A graphing calculator, the TI-84 Plus model is required.
Creative Writing No textbook required but a supply list will be determined at a later date.

Rhetoric: Introduction to Composition and Public Speaking
Writers Inc-A Student Handbook for Writing and Learning, the 2006 copyright. Please make sure the handbook is the 2006 version. If a resource is determined for the public speaking component, we will let you know that by the beginning of the summer.
Introduction to Literature
Students will borrow copies of Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes, an anthology published by Prentice Hall. You do not need to purchase this book. Students will need to purchase Red Hot Root Words Book 2 by Diane Draze ISBN-13: 978-1-59363-129-1 and the Writer’s Inc handbook listed above from Introduction to Composition. Students will also reimburse the school for any novels used in the class (approximately $50.00).
British Literature
Students will borrow copies of The British Tradition, published by Prentice Hall. You do not need to purchase this book. Students will also reimburse the school for any novels used in the class (approximately $50.00).

Spanish II

Spanish III
Students will complete the Spanish II text and activities manual. Students will rent CD’s from the office. If you are buying Spanish II material for the first time, please note that you need to buy the Spanish II student text, student activities book, and activities manual teacher’s edition, but you do not need to buy the tests. “The Easy Spanish Reader” must also be purchased, ISBN 007142806
