Realism and Abstraction
Summary of Content / Pupils will begin by studying small (real) bugs in plastic and having to enlarge them helping them with proportions. Pupils to learn printmaking techniques/ principles and produce a lino cut design (2016 cohort will recap from year 7 learning). Pupils will create a layered bug drawing which they will then create into a Eugene Alain Seguy inspired pattern which pupils will paint over a series of lessons.
Techniques: Scale/Proportion, mark makin, tonal range, mixing paints, Colour theory recap (from year 7).
Media: Biro, Chalk/Charcoal, pen/ink, colouring pencil, PRINTMAKING- Lino cut, watercolour.
Artists looked at:
● Historical- ALBRECHT DÜRER, Francesco Stelluti (scientific drawings with microscopes)
● Contemporary -Eugene Alain Seguy (20th century), Adrienne Antonson (human hair miniature bugs). / This project aims to build on core painting skills aiming for greater understanding colour blending, mixing and application of paint. Preps will focus on drawing skills, drawing from a variety of objects including: Russian dolls, Cakes to lego bricks. Inspired by some of their favorite sweets and chocolate bars students will create their own realistic sweet painting.
Students will be asked to copy small parts of paintings from a number of famous works in order to practice different brush and paint application. Students will sketch a range of still life objects from different angles to create an abstract composition which will them become a Cubist inspired painting.
This project will also get students to think more critically at painting styles and how they might be achieved comparing works such as as Wayne Thiebaud’s with Charles Bell’s paintings.
Techniques:
Optical mixing with colour pencils, colour mixing, blending. / Focusing on proportions of the face and doing studies of the eyes/ mouth/ ears and nose individually. Pupils will use mirrors to draw from real life. Pupils will look at what a ‘relief’ is and work towards creating their own tribal mask.
Techniques: Mark making, modelling with paper. Continuous line drawing, blind drawing. (Recap 2016 from year 7 learning- the proportions of the face). Colour wheel- colour theory.
Media: Collage, Pencil and pen. Acrylic paint.
