Purpose / This unit standard is for people in the automotive fuel injection industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge VE typefuel pump operation and repair procedures; dismantle a VE typepump and complete an inspection report; renew and replace pump components and reassemble pump; and bench test a VE typefuel injection pump assembly and adjust settings.

Rangefuel contamination, misalignment of fuel pump and drive train, timing advance, injector seal leakage, adjustments.
1.5Wear patterns on components are described according to fuel injection pump manual description.
Rangefuel contamination, misalignment, lack of lubrication, corrosion, abrasion, cavitation.

Dismantle a VE typepump and complete an inspection report.

2.1Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

2.2Suitable tools and workshop equipment are selected and used, to enable the pump assembly to be dismantled and inspected.
2.3The fuel pump assembly is dismantled on a stripping jig according to manufacturer's instructions.
2.4All parts are cleaned to enable an inspection to be carried out.
2.5A condition report is completed and given to the supervisor.
Rangeinspection of parts, identifying and recording faults, recommending repairs and replacement of parts.
Outcome 3
Renew and replace pump components and reassemble pump.

3.1Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

3.2Suitable tools and workshop equipment are selected and used, to enable the components to be replaced and the pump assembly to be reassembled according to manufacturer's specifications.
3.3All parts that are determined as needing replacement are ordered from a supplier.
Rangeinterpreting parts catalogues, using updates and supersessions, obtaining pricing and delivery details.
3.4The pump is reassembled with new and existing parts according to manufacturer's instructions and specifications.
Outcome 4
Bench test a VE typefuel injection pump assembly and adjust settings.
Evidence requirements
4.1Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Rangepersonal safety, safety of others, equipment safety, safety precautions when working with high pressure fuel.
4.2Suitable tools and workshop equipment are selected and used, to enable the pump assembly to be tested and adjustments made according to manufacturer's specifications.
4.3The fuel pump assembly is mounted and set up for testing and setting on a test bench according to manufacturer's instructions.
4.4The fuel pump assembly is tested, and settings are made according to manufacturer's specifications.
Rangecalibration, automatic advance, timing mark checked.
4.5The fuel pump assembly is removed from the test bench with fuel inlets and adjustments sealed.
