Converting In Metric

The International System of Measurement (SI) is a modern form of the older metric system. It is sometimes referred to as the metric system. Every linear measurement in this system contains the word meter. Prefixes used with the base word meter indicate measurements that are smaller or larger than a meter.

All volume measurements are derived from linear measurements and contain the word liter. Prefixes used with the base word liter indicate volumes that are smaller or larger than a liter.

The basic unit of mass is the gram. Prefixes used with the base word gram indicate masses that are smaller or larger than one gram.

To convert from one quantity to another, follow these rules:

(1) When changing from a larger unit to a smaller one, multiply.

(2) When changing from a smaller unit to a larger one, divide.
