PDH CREDITS: Here is your chance to earn up to 12 professional development hours. You will receive 1 PDH per classroom hour. To receive any PDH credits, you must sign in at the beginning of each seminar and stay for the complete duration of each scheduled seminar. Certificate will be given at the end of each seminar. The SC Society of Professional Land Surveyors meets the requirements for a continuing education provider of the South Carolina State Board of Registration and is a qualified provider of continuing education for the North Carolina Board of Registration.

ATTENTION LSITs and Prospective Surveyors: Thursday and Friday morning’s“EXAM REVIEW”seminar will be the last time this year the SCSPLS will present this informative seminar to help prepare for the National Fundamentals of Land Surveying exam. Please pass this information on to your staff or anyone interested in preparing for a career in land surveying and taking the LSIT exam. Friday’s session Principles & Practice of Land Surveying National Exam (Part 3 & 4) will be a review for those taking the PLS exam Part 3 & 4.

SESSION 2: “Quick Books Pro”

This course is designed as an introduction to QuickBooks. The course will cover (1) Getting Started With QuickBooks, (2) Setting up a company, and (3) Working with Lists (data bases).

James (JC) Collins grew up in the low country of South Carolina and graduated from the Citadel with a BS in Business Administration in 1974. He started his career in public accounting in Columbia with Finch, Hamilton & Company. After three years in Public Accounting, JC moved into manufacturing where he worked as Controller and CFO for various companies. In 1995, he started an accounting practice geared towards small to medium sized companies that cannot afford and do not need a full time controller. At the same time, he started teaching QuickBooks for Midlands Tech. He is a certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor since 1999 and today his company works on retainer for approximately forty companies on QuickBooks.

SESSION 3: “New FEMA Flood Elevation Certificate and Letters of Map Change Seminar” (Earn 3 PDHs for this seminar)

FEMA has revised the flood elevation certificate, and will begin requiring use of these new certificates soon. FEMA is also now providing the flood insurance rate maps in digital format (DFIRM’s) for many counties. This seminar will address how to complete and interpret these new certificates, along with LOMAs and LOMRs, and how to utilize these new county-wide digital flood insurance rate maps. Mrs. Jones will also report onthe progress that is being made under the Multi-Hazard Flood Map Modernization Project with FEMA. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the S.C. NFIP Office about these important changes to the NFIP.

Lisa Jonesis the Project Manager for all facets of floodplain management, including administration of the Community Assistance, Map Modernization and Flood Mitigation Programs for the State of South Carolina. Lisa has over 15 years experience in her field. She currently serves as Federal Liaison for the Association of State Floodplain Managers, a trustee for the ASFPM Foundation, and as a member of the CRS Task Force. She served as Chair of the Association of State Floodplain Managers from 1999-2001. Mr. Jim Sanders taught in the Civil Engineering Technology Division of Midlands Technical College, Columbia, SC for twenty-eight years. He has been retired for the past several years. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and received his Masters of Engineering degree in 1968. He has been a registered professional engineer in South Carolina since 1970. His previous work experience before joining Midlands Tech was with Owens Steel and Wilbur Smith and Associates.

Mr. Charles Geoghegan was raised in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, where hegraduated high school in 1975. He worked for the next ten years with the National Geodetic Survey.His duties ranged from survey structure construction foremanto the use of precise theodolites, EDM equipment, and GPS equipment.He successfully completed the Basic Geodetic Surveying course at Ft. Belvoir, Va. and participated in several special projects. In 1985 he joined the SC Geodetic Survey, where he has become proficient in geodetic leveling, has established EDM calibration baselines, and managed a 400-station NGS/SCGS pilot project using 3-D traverse techniques. For the last eight years, Charles has been responsible for GPS project planning, data processing, quality control, adjustment and data submission to NGS. In 2001, he finished work on an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology. He is currently licensed to perform geodetic work.

Mr. Sid Miller and Mr. Ronnie Tyler will also be instructing in this LSIT Exam Review course on Thursday.

Learn how navigate, create, write formulas, enter and edit data for the use of creating spreadsheets and workbooks. This Microsoft Excel seminar will cover the basics of EXCEL, as well as Tips and Tricks for the intermediate to advanced user. This seminar will be in lecture format and will involve interaction with the class in order to customize specific tasks for the surveyor.

Construction contracting and subcontracting is a risky business. Those who supply labor, services and materials in the construction industry are reminded of this risk each time they have written off bad debts or “hung” receivables. The purpose of this course is to assist those who supply labor, materials, equipment, or services to construction projects in order to increase their chances of getting paid.

Mr. Floyd is a graduate of the Citadel and the University of South Carolina School of Law. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1997, Mr. Floyd worked for a year as a consulting engineer in Augusta, Georgia. Mr. Floyd joined the law firm of Bruner, Powell, Robbins, Wall & Mullins, LLC as an Associate in 2001. His practice areas include Construction Law, Legal Malpractice Defense and debt collection.

Wesley D. Peel, BPRWM Attorney

Mr. Peel received his undergraduate and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina. During law school, Mr. Peel served on the Student Editorial Board of the Probate and Trust Journal and worked as a legal writing instructor. Mr. Peel joined the law firm of Bruner, Powell, Robbins, Wall & Mullins, LLC in 1995 as an Associate and became a Partner in 2000. Mr. Peel is actively involved in numerous bar committees and community service activities, including the Boy Scouts of America. His practice areas include Construction Law, Legal Malpractice Defense, and Healthcare and Administrative Law.

Ronnie L. Tyler, PLS

Mr. Ronnie L. Tyler currently serves as President and Surveyor-in-charge of Terra Firma, Inc., specializing in forensic surveys and boundary disputes. He is a Professional Land Surveyor with 35 years experience and a Real Estate Broker with 17 years experience. Mr. Tyler is a consultant and surveyor for the development, planning and construction of residential, commercial and industrial developments. He has experience in court litigation matters as an expert witness, including real estate boundary and title matters and other litigation cases where measurements were of importance. Mr. Tyler served seven years on the Charleston County Planning and Zoning Commission serving two years as Chairman. He is a member and Past President of the SC Society of Professional Land Surveyors, currently serving as District 1 Director. In 1994, Mr. Tyler was awarded SC Surveyor of the Year for outstanding contributions to the surveying profession by the SCSPLS. He was awarded First Place for his Boundary/Cadastral Map in the National Society of Professional Surveyors 1998 Plat Competition. He has also written articles and taught seminars on surveying and real estate principles and law for land surveyors, surveyors-in-training, title abstractors, real estate brokers, paralegals, and attorneys.

This program is a continuation of Thursday’s session for anyone preparing to take part one and two of the National Surveying exam, Fundamentals of Land Surveying (FLS). SESSION 4: “GPS – RTK with Cell Modems” Part 1

(Earn 6 PDHs for this course- Part I &2 morning & afternoon session)

This seminar will investigate the requirements for proper planning and execution of GPS surveying in order to maximize efficiency and accuracy. The seminar will highlight how toincorporate the geodetic network into local surveys. A practical example composed of a small network of points will be given to the participants who will then have an opportunity to plan an actual survey. The class will evaluate all the pros and cons of various planning schemes to develop a better understanding of the variables in planning.

Dr. Lapine is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and new technology related to the geodetic network for the State of South Carolina. He retired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) after serving as Director of the Office of National Geodetic Survey (NGS). Dr. Lapine has served as chair of the Federal Geodetic Control Subcommittee and the Federal GPS Interagency Advisory Council. He served as a board member on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Position and Navigation Executive Committee and combined Department of Defense and DOT Global Positioning System Executive Board. Dr. Lapine received his Doctor of Philosophy in Geodetic Science from OhioStateUniversity. He is a Registered Land Surveyor in South Carolina and North Carolina.

Mr. Matt Wellslager works for the SC Geodetic Survey and specializes in GPS planning and implementation.
