Job Purpose: The chaplain, though his/her work and witness, will contribute to the spiritual and pastoral care of all members of the Federation Communities. S/he will have a central role in implementing the school vision statement and work with the Head teachers in leading and developing the Catholic life of the school. S/he will nurture the liturgical life of the school and promote community cohesion. The chaplain will work to enhance the Religious Education curriculum in a variety of ways.
Resources / Staff / No responsibility for other staff.
Finance / Basic record keeping.
Physical / Keeping own work station /area organised
Clients / Children, parents, visitors – teaching and support staff.
Duties and key result areas:
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Supporting the Head Teacher in Development of Catholic Ethos of the School
· Promoting and encouraging Christian Discipleship with pupils and staff
· To promote Gospel values throughout the schools
· To enable all members of the school communities to be aware of and respond to the unique vocation God has given her/him
· To encourage pupils to have a strong sense of moral responsibility at an individual, communal and global level
· To support any sacramental preparation that is taking place in the schools and surrounding parishes.
Prayer and Worship
· To plan, prepare and lead a variety liturgies and collective worship .This could include liturgies with small groups, class groups, year groups or the whole school. These will include end of term services, Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter services, staff INSET days, special celebrations
· To support staff in their planning, preparation and leading liturgies and collective worship
· To support children in their planning, preparation and leading of liturgies and collective worship
· To plan, prepare and facilitate Masses as required in school or in conjunction with local parishes
· To provide regular prayer opportunities for the staff, pupils, parents, and the wider community
Curriculum Support
· To support and enhance the RE curriculum in chaplaincy time
· To support and enhance the Citizenship/PSHE curriculum in chaplaincy time
Pastoral Work
· To be visible and approachable
· To be available for pupils, parents and staff
· To work with class teachers in supporting individuals and groups of pupils as appropriate to support the Head Teacher in her/his role as faith leader in the school
· To play a central role in the pastoral system
· To work with ‘Leading Link’ and other appropriate services in providing spiritual resources and content into activities and involvement are made available to students and staff
Professional Development
· To attend INSET relevant to the role of chaplain
· To lead school based INSET for staff
Self-Evaluation
· To work with the Head Teacher to carry out self-evaluation with particular reference to the Catholic Life of the school
Retreats
· To prepare retreats for each year group in keys stages, 2, 3, 4 & 5. They will differ in duration and structure as appropriate and some may be
residential
· To attend an annual retreat to enhance own spiritual well-being
Charities
· To promote, co-ordinate and implement the annual programme of charity support
Prayer Rooms
· To promote and care for the prayer room as a special place for worship and private prayer and contemplation
· To ensure liturgical resources are adequate and appropriate
School Environment
· To ensure the school environments and displays enhance the Catholic Life of the schools and the teaching of Religious Education
Governors
· To provide regular reports to the Governors concerning the work of chaplains and the development of the Catholic Life of the schools
· To meet and work with Governors in developing the Catholic Life of the schools
Parish Liaison and Communication
· To liaise closely with relevant parish priests
· To raise the profile of the schools in the local communities
· To include relevant parishes in school celebrations
Diocesan Liaison
· To be a member of the Diocesan Chaplaincy Group which meets termly
· To liaise with others in the Diocese for example such as YMT, More Than Dance, Pauline Books
Social Justice and Global Citizenship
· To promote awareness, reflection and action in light of the Church’s Social Teaching
· To encourage staff and pupils to live the faith by being involved in projects such as Fair Trade, Live Simply Campaign, CAFOD, St Cuthbert’s Care
· To promote community cohesion
· To ensure that any goods traded in the school are fairly traded and assist with this when possible
