4) Background
Established in 1982, Mill on the Brue Outdoor Activity Centre is based in Bruton, Somerset in the South West of England. It is a family run business and provides residential and day outdoor activity courses. We accommodate up to 84 guests plus an extra 50 in our campsite, from May to September. Courses are run for school groups, adults, special needs and unaccompanied children and offer a wide range of outdoor activities and educational projects.
The Centre is open from January until December. It must be understood that Mill on the Brue is NOT a hotel but more like a youth hostel with bunk bedded accommodation and shared washing facilities.
We have a strong environmental ethos and encourage our staff, customers and local community to be more environmentally aware. We recycle about 80% of our waste and have planted hundreds of new trees to encourage wildlife. We have sustainable, organic kitchen gardens, which provide much of the vegetable and fruits for our customers.
We are in a rural location but within 10 minutes walking to the nearest train station which travels direct to Bristol and Bath or Weymouth – approximately one hour by train. This line also has links to London and there is a regular bus service to London. Bruton has local pubs, which serve food, restaurants and take-away services as well as small local shops, a local post-office, a pharmacy and a church. There is a Health Centre. There are local links to nearby shopping areas such as Frome and Yeovil via the train and Street via the local bus service.
