11/10 Stud Gov meeting
Meg de Marco from DoS office
Stud Gov role in student group approval
not a rubber stamp
play a meaningful role
DoS is more an administrative overview
FSLP update
going well, lots of work
next year - option for non-anonymous survey?
Course eval update
Spring 08 up!
begin work on polls for Fall 08 soon
Committees update
going well, just a few positions open still
Exam prep session
is another (from us) needed?
1L feedback
do like the idea
aren't there a lot of these already?
do we need a panel, maybe a written guide would be just as useful or more so even
specific things for the panel to talk about
now maybe too redundant
specific recommendations
2L/3L feedback
not so much necessary
LLMs
would like to take advantage of that too
Student group approval process
in the past we were a bit of a rubber stamp
we've been given a mandate to play a more substantive role now
what types of questions and standards do we want to ask?
part new, more well articulated standing committees could be a student group approval committee
maybe more efficient?
another perspective that perhaps a group or individual does a little bit of prep work before the meeting to present the Stud Gov with a better basis to make a decision
other similar groups, etc.
Hrishi would like us to email out the list of current groups if possible
re-registration procedures at the beginning of ever year for student groups
DoS says must have an annual budget submitted every year to stay active
sometimes the budget is submitted year before by outgoing, but no new officers come in the next year
Health Issue Awareness Society
provide HLS students with an opportunity to get involved in health related issues
several activities set up and/or planned
how different from Health Care Society?
they more about the legal world of healthcare
we are more about fundraising and activism. They've not done those things in the past.
don't know that they're opposed to doing those things, but just that they are not interested in them now
sources of funding
not really others, but not really much of a need for funds
basically just encouraging people to participate in activities that already ongoing
money for speakers at panels maybe
teaming up with similar groups from other Harvard schools
how many people from activities fair?
12-15
maybe about 1/3 from each class
ensuring continuing success of group in years to come?
hopefully, looking to make current 1Ls board members this year
several events are ones that happen and can be continued on yearly bases
why official HLS recognition
easier to get speakers
small amount of funding
primarily, easier to get students to sign up if an officially recommended group
Stud Gov discussion
good, positive ideas
reasons for non-approval
could just work with existing health group
not entirely sure why they need to be an organization to have a blood drive
this is a group that is genuinely trying to do something good
might look good for the school to have a group doing this type of work
should we find out more about existing health organization's view about working with these goals?
will probably do good, but will the do well
viability going forward?
maybe don't need a lot of people
more of an outreach program
potential downside to having this group go out with HLS name and promote activist causes?
if we are trying to reduce redundancy in groups, we may need to explore the overlap with this group and the existing health group (Harvard Law and Healthcare Society)
would like to know if they really can't work with current group
can we email current group for feedback on this group and whether or not they would be able to work together
however, don't want to get into playing "matchmaker"
maybe the distinction is really different, with different vibes
maybe fear of redundancy is not necessary
vote to decide now or not
now is majority
vote to approve
approved
still do need to look into what the other group is doing
Harvard Legal Theory Forum
purpose discussion
HLS reputation as anti-intellectual environment
Duncan Kennedy excited to be faculty adviser
demise of law and philosophy society
non-political orientation/cross political spectrum approach to looking at legal theory
already positive response
85 people joined email list already
including people from other schools, SJDs, and even some faculty
recent Sunstein event very successful
over 100 students came
structure
alternating session - hopefully biweekly
1) student to student
2) more formal with faculty involvement
have had 3-4 events this year already
at least one co-sponsored
treasurer to try to raise money
bring in professors from NYU and Yale
long term goals
ideally, a colloquium like NYU's
opportunities for aspiring academics to post papers online
how many people been showing up at small readings
15, 5, and 4
how many 1Ls and more core students interest, not just SJDs and outside school people?
few LLMs, 1L, and 2L and integral members
another 1L helping with administrative work
other LLMs with interest
84 people on listserv
wondering why this type of thing hasn't existed for a while here
Unbound does some work in this area now
but not everyone in this area feels great about working in the "Left"
also, not everyone interested in working in journal setting to publish articles, etc.
other sources of funding?
not sure yet other than law school
school did give one of board members to go to a conference already
Stud Gov discussion
great group, good program
possible concern - how many actually 1-3Ls involved?
very organized group
don't confuse well organized with being a great/usefull group
but I do think they are a good group
very big reception thus far
very appealing to professors and may be able to get professors to come talk that we would otherwise be able to get to come talk
have to approve them to present a more appealing and theoretical based side to school
vote to approve
approved
constituent concerns
