Twenty-FifthSunday in Ordinary Time
Wisdom 2:12, 17-20; James 3:16—4:3; Mark 9:30-37 [134B]
In today’s Gospel reading, the second of Jesus’ three passion predictions (see Mk 10:32-34 for the third Passion prediction), Jesus once again emphasizes the centrality of his suffering, death and resurrection in terms of his identity as the Messiah and the Son of Man. It is significant that Marks tells us, “But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.”
It is likely that “the saying” the disciples did not understand was “and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.” It is probable that the disciples, as Palestinian Jews, would have believed in the idea of Israel’s collective resurrection from the dead as a nation (as the Pharisees believed).
But the idea of an individual resurrection from the dead may have been a new and unclear idea to them. Rather than ask Jesus, the disciples instead talked to (and argued with) each other about who was the greatest among them. Jesus saw that the disciples’ own human ambition was blinding them. Jesus’ reaction to the disciples’ ambition was to teach them about the virtues of humility (with the “the first shall be last” saying) and simplicity (by bringing the child into their midst).

Dear Friends,
After over five years of ministry to our St. Joseph’s community, Fr. John Barnabas Davis, O.P., will be moving to Washington, D.C., to minister in our Dominican parish of St. Dominic. He will bring there his greatly appreciated preaching insights. Fr. Davis, besides offering excellent teaching, has been very energetic in his shepherding of our very large Graduate and Law Students Association. Also he has always been very generous in taking care of a large percentage of our numerous baptisms and weddings. John has also been very popular counselor for many seeking his wise advice.
We thank him and wish him well in his new endeavors.
Coming to St. Joseph’s to replace John is Fr. Gabriel Guillen, O.P., who currently ministers at St. Catherine of SiennaChurch in Manhattan. Fr. Gabriel is ordained only a few years and will be a welcome addition to our ministry. I am sure you will receive him warmly,
Fr. John P. McGuire, O.P.
