London is served by 2 major airports.
1. Heathrow. Get the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow to Holborn Station – no change required. Journey time about 1 hour.
2. Gatwick. Gatwick is served by the Gatwick Express which goes to Victoria Station in 30-40 minutes (single about 15 stg, return about £26). From there you can take the underground Victoria line one stop to Green Park, then change to Piccadilly for 4 stops to Holborn.
Top tip: At Gatwick, instead ask for a one-way ticket travelling with First Capital Connect to King’s Cross Station WITH ONE-DAY TUBE TRAVEL CARD INCLUDED (about £1 extra, total about £11 stg). Journey time about 1 hour.
Once at King’s Cross mainline station, use the underground to travel 2 stops to Holborn tube station on the Piccadilly Line. Alternatively, the overground train first passes through Farringdon station from which you can walk to the RCPCH in about 20 minutes.
To check time of these frequent mainline trains, use http://www.thetrainline.com/
Minor airports
3. Stansted airport. The expensive Stansted Express links the airport to Liverpool Street train station in about 45 mins. (£21 single, £30 return). From there take the underground Central line to Holborn.
A cheaper alternative is to follow the signs at Stansted airport for buses/coaches, and catch the A9 National Express bus to Stratford (the terminus is beside Stratford tube station). These buses leave every half hour and take 50 mins. Cost £8 single, £15 return. At Stratford tube station, take the Central line to Holborn. To check times of the buses, use http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx and ensure your destination is “London Stratford”
4. Luton airport.
From Luton airport there is a regular shuttle bus (cost about £4?) to the nearby train station (Luton airport Parkway). Trains from there go to London’s St Pancras International in about 30 mins. A single is about £13, a return about £20. It’s worth asking how much extra it would be to include a one-day tube travel card on the train ticket. St Pancras is beside King’s Cross Station, so you can walk to there, and get the underground Piccadilly line to Holborn. Or walk to the RCPCH, about 30 minutes.
5. City Airport.
City airport is served by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) which is shown on the standard tube map above and separately here:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/dlr-route-map.pdf
A one-day travel card zones 1-4 should cover you for travel on the DLR as well as the tube. You can take the DLR to Canning town, change there for an underground Jubilee Line to its final destination Stratford, and there take the Central Line to Holborn, OR, ensuring you are on a Bank branch of the DLR, continue from Bank station to Holborn on the underground Central line. You could alternatively get a 473 bus from the airport to Stratford tube/train station. Journey times about 40 minutes, total cost about £6.
