Discovery Family Connection (DFC) Meeting

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Members present: Leslie Keefe-Hernandez, Erik Dodge, Aleah Mickelson, Ian Eggleston, Rissa Eggleston, Angela Gonzalez, Felicia Hernandez

Members not present: Lexi Mitchell, Vice President; Del Carmichael, Principal

Meeting location: KDF Architecture board room

Reports:

•  Principal’s Report – No Principal’s Report this month.

·  Treasurer’s Report – Erik Dodge reports several outstanding checks from last month have cleared, including the $145 reimbursement for low attendance at the recent Skateland event and reimbursements to several teachers. The DFC account balance is currently $12,746.05. Available checking balance is $6,416.24. Erik expressed concern is that if we spend all of our budgeted funds, we will not have any money for next year. Historically, DFC has not spent all budgeted funds, but we need to limit unnecessary spending to ensure we maintain a surplus at the end of the year for sufficient carryover for next year.

·  ASB Report – ASB Co-President Ian Eggleston reports the 2nd Grade Classroom won the Box Tops competition and will be rewarded with a popcorn party. The ASB is encouraging parents to sign up through Safeway and Red Robin to earn additional points on purchases. They hope to also add Albertsons and Fred Meyer soon.

The final ASB Movie Night is Friday, March 4. The movie will be “Inside Out.”

Eleven middle school ASB officers attended the regional ASB leadership conference at Franklin Middle School on Tuesday, February 9. The event was designed to allow ASB officers to share ideas with council members from other schools.

The Middle School Dance is Friday, March 18 from 7-9 pm. It is a movie-themed event, and students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite movie character.

ASB and DFC are teaming up on the Walkathon. It is scheduled for Friday, April 22 at the conclusion of Spirit week. Three business sponsors have contributed funds to offset the cost of the T-shirts: Howard’s Medical Supply, Memorial Hospital, and Yakima Sports Supply. New prizes are being offered this year to encourage more student participation in the Walkathon.

Additional News: ASB is raising money to try and replace at least one of our outdoor basketball hoops. Angela Gonzalez noted that local business Bob Hall awards money yearly for this type of project. She will look into this opportunity.

The 8th Grade yard sale is Saturday, March 12. Donations will be collected at the curb before and after school all next week.

·  President’s Report – Pennies for Patients starts March 7 and continues through March 25. Leslie reports DFC will oversee the counting and deposit funds on March 18 and 25. Rissa Eggleston will oversee these duties on March 11.

The New Parent Night is scheduled for March 22 at 6 pm. At least one member of DFC needs to be at the meeting to meet prospective parents and answer questions.

Staff Appreciation Week is May 2-6. All DLS staff members (approximately 22-26 members) are honored this week. Special treats and gifts are distributed each day. DFC oversees two days, and the remaining three days are overseen by ASB, Site Council and the 8th Grade Class. Leslie is requesting ideas for good gifts in the $10 price range. Past gifts have included Starbucks and car wash gift certificates.

Nominations for next year’s DFC officers will occur at the April 12 DFC meeting, with voting to follow at the May DFC meeting.

·  Open Forum Q&A–Felicia Hernandez suggests a water balloon fundraiser in conjunction with Field Day. Students can buy water balloons to throw at staff members, etc. Leslie suggests we revisit this idea at the next DFC meeting.

Next meeting: April 12 at 6:30 pm.

Meeting Adjourned at 7:37 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Aleah Mickelson

DFC Secretary
