Communications and Public Affairs Manager

Purpose of job:

This role supports the communications and public affairs team and the fundraising team so that Become can make a greater positive impact on the everyday lives and future life chances of children and young people in care.

Key responsibilities:

Communications and Public Affairs

  • To coordinate subscriptions toour magazines Become and Become Junior, seeking to persuade subscribers to renew when their subscription ends, and supporting the marketing of the magazines to potential new subscribers (most of whom are organisations with responsibility for children in care, rather than individuals).
  • To support the communications and public affairs team in the creation and sharing of promotional materials.
  • To support the delivery of a press office function.
  • To support the planning and delivery of campaigning activity.
  • To create digital and social media content that promotes the charity and persuades people to engage with us.
  • To support the delivery of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Looked After Children and Care Leavers.
  • To assist the communications and public affairs team with any other activity as required.

Fundraising

  • To recruit and support individuals taking part in fundraising events and initiatives (such as marathons and bike rides).
  • To help with the researching, drafting and sending out of funding applications to small grant-making trusts.
  • To work on fundraising promotional materials (including website, e-newsletters, social media).
  • To assist the fundraising team with other activity as required.

General

  • To update and maintain contact records on our database (Raiser’s Edge).
  • To work on data collection for our Propel project, ensuring that entries onPropel for each UK higher education institution’s offer for care leavers is up to date (see Propel.org.uk)
  • To provide support for other projects work as needed.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:

  • Experience of communications or marketing, preferably in a charity.
  • Experience of fundraising, which could be in a voluntary capacity.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Highly confident and engaging telephone manner.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills with ability to manage own workload effectively.
  • Able to take an innovative and creative approach to work.
  • High level of proficiency in the use of MS Office, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with and enthusiasm for social media.
  • Commitment to the vision, mission and values of Become.

Desirable:

  • Experience of using a CRM database such as Raiser’s Edge.
  • Experience of using content management systems.
  • Experience of using Mailchimp or similar software.
  • Understanding of the issues affecting children and young people in and from care.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
