INTRODUCTION

The Riverside Middle School (RMS)Disciplinary Handbook is intended to complement the

Student/ Parent Handbook. Additionally, it communicates the behavior expectations,

philosophy, policies, and responses to behavior concerns within the campus. Please use this

handbook as a reference throughout the school year.

The staff members at Riverside Middle School are committed to providing a safe and

positive learning environment for all children. We work hard to provide all students with

proactive Social Emotional Learning that enables them to successfully follow the school-

wide expectations.

Students at Riverside Middle School are expected to be safe, respectful, and responsible

members of the school community in order to contribute to a positive school environment in

which all students feel like they belong.

Parent/ guardian involvement is an important aspect of our school environment. To maximize

student success, the staff members of Riverside Middle School strive to partner with families.

Staff members are encouraged to contact parents and establish collaborative relationships that

will instill trust in our school, and staff.

EXPECTATIONS

All students attending Riverside Middle School are expected to......

These expectations are posted for all students (class room rules). All staff will teach, model, practice, and re-teach throughout the year. Explicit instruction will be provided on what is safe, respectful, responsible, and belonging behaviors looks, sounds and feels like in each area of the school, including cafeteria, hallway, lunchroom, and courtyard. All staff work to positively acknowledge children who are following the behavior expectations. Behaviors that are not aligned with the expectations will be addressed through a Tired Response to Behaviors.

TheCollaborativeProblemSolvingmodelisused at Riverside Middle Schoolatopromoteasafe,respectful,responsiblelearning environmentin whichallstudentsbelong.Thisapproachisdesignedtoinvolve studentsinresolvingproblembehaviorsincollaborationwithasupervisingadult.CPS affirmsthebeliefthat"kidsdowell,iftheycan,"andthatbehaviordifficultiesareoften theresultoflaggingsocialemotionalskills.Theadultsintheschoolworktoidentify thoselaggingskillsandassiststudentsinfindingsolutionstotheirproblemthatdonot violatetherulesoftheschoolortherightsofothers.

PositiveBehaviorInterventionFramework(PBIF)

EachCampusschoolhasworkedtocreateaPBIF. Eachframeworkincludes·tourmain components:

1. Agreed-uponschool-widepositivebehaviorexpectationsthatareclearly andpositivelystatedandpostedthroughoutthebuilding.

2. Expectationstaughtliketheacademiccurriculumandincludeguided practiceandreviewthroughouttheschoolyear.

3. Asystemtorecognizeoracknowledgestudentswhentheydisplay

appropriatebehaviors.

4. Asystemtocollectandanalyzedata,identifyproblemareas, and brainstorminterventionstosupportstudents.

Avarietyofresourcesat RMS areavailabletohelpstudentsbesafe,respectful,responsible, andfeelasenseofbelongingatRiverside Middle School. SBCIDemployssupport staffwithtremendousassetsandspecializedskillstoassiststudentsandfamiliesas needed. StudentsattheCampusSchoolshaveavarietyofadultstheymayaccessto supportthemwithanyissuesthatmightinterferewiththeirlearning. Theseadultsmay include:

Persistentproblembehaviors: Itisimportanttonotethatsomebehaviorsbecomemore severewhentheyreoccurorpersistoveraperiodoftime.Forexample,teasingcan becomebullyingwhendoneinapersistentmanner.BehaviorslistedinTier1may becomeaTierII orTierIllissueifthebehaviorcontinuestooccur.

Contextof behaviors:Thecontextofabehaviormayalsoaffectthedegreeof seriousness. Forexample,swearingatapersonwillbeconsideredamoreserious concernthanswearingalone.Asschoolstaffworktomaintaintheschoolexpectations, problembehaviorswillbeexaminedonacase-by-case basisastheyworktodetermine thelevelofseverity.

Riverside Middle School Disciplinary Report:

Theformthatisusedtodocumentproblembehaviorsiscalledthe Student Discipline Report(Referral).Staffmembersusethisformtodocumentabehaviorincidentandthe responsetothebehavior.Studentsmayreceive a Referralwhendemonstratingminor and/ormajorbehaviors.

TheStudent Discipline Report (Referral)helpsusgatherspecificinformationabouttheincident.Thisdataisusedto studythetypesofbehaviorsthatareoccurringatRMS.By studyingthisinformation,wecanfurtherreducebehaviorincidentsbyeliminating contributingfactors,providingspecificsocial-emotionalinstruction,andotherstudent supports services.

Communication:

TheReferralisprimarilyusedintheschoolasacommunicationtoolbetweenthechild's teacherandtheschooladministration.Ifyourchildreceiveda Referral,youwillbenotified bytelephoneoremail.Insomecases,theformmaybesenthomewiththestudent. Parentsandguardiansarealwayswelcometocontacttheirchild'steacherorschool administration to discuss any questions they may have about a behavior incident.
