Build Your Own Dream House
Congrats! You just found out that you get to build your own dream home! Everything you make will be specifically designed by you and your family. You will be starting from scratch by creating blue prints, then designing room sizing and the layout of your house, and what type of flooring and how much it will cost!
Let’s talk about how you start.
First, you need to create a blueprint of what you want your house to look like. Here are the minimum requirements:
- One bathroom
- Two bedroom
- One kitchen
- One living room
- Hallways
- 3 different types of flooring
- Be between 750 square feet and 1,000 square feet in total size
In order to be most successful, first create a blueprint without worrying about actual numbers. You are only creating a one floor house. Be sure to mark doors, wall openings and windows. After your blueprint is complete, figure out how much square footage you want your entire house to have in total (remember- Length X Width = Total square feet). From there, choose the entire length of the house and the entire width of the house. Be sure it meets the square footage requirements. Lastly, figure out the size of each room and hallway by being sure each length and width adds up to what you decided for each side of the house. These dimensions should be visible either on your floor plan or neatly listed somewhere in your presentation. Adding furniture or any other features is advised.
Next, you will figure out a scale (for example, 1 in = 2 ft) and use a ruler to create a scale drawing of your floor plan. For instance, if your bedroom is 10 feet by 9 feet, then your scale drawing would be 5 inches by 4.5 inches since 1 inch = 2 feet. The scale you’ve created needs to be somewhere on your final copy of the floor plan. This scale drawing will be considered your GOOD COPY of this assignment and will be neatly presented either on poster board or any other material. YOU MUST TURN IN BOTH COPIES! (Attach rubric as well.)
Along with the plan of your house, you will also be showing the yard around your house. Use some geometric figures you’ve learned so far to add some features such as a patio, a pool, trees, etc. Your final copy should be in COLOR and neatly presented.
While planning and designing your dream home, you need to start thinking about different material. All sorts of materials are needed in designing and building a house. Different materials are used for flooring, cabinets, bath tubs and sinks, and so much more. For this project, you are choosing three different types of flooring for your house. You are to choose which flooring will be in which part of your house and you will be researching how much each material cost per square foot. Once you figure out the pricing, you will calculate the cost for each type of flooring in whichever rooms you’ve chosen. All of your calculations should be shown and all of this information should be put into a chart like this:
Material / Cost per ft2 / Room / Ft2 of room / Cost for each room1
