BAPTISMS

Baptisms are every Sunday at 1:00 PM. Parents are asked to call the Parish Center and speak with the Priest or Deacon who is on call and who will assist them in registering their child for Baptism. The Church assists the parents by offering instruction on the meaning, importance, and responsibilities of the sacrament of Baptism. A Pre-Jordan Baptismal Program for helping parents prepare for the spiritual birth of their child is held on the fourth Sunday of the month in the Spirituality Center following the Noon Mass.

Dear People of Saint Anselm Parish,

I would like to thank Father Dunleavy, Father Friel, Deacon Whartenby, Deacon Warner, and the Parishioners of Saint Anselm for your prayers, cards, donations to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, and kind support you gave to my brother. My brother loved his time at Saint Anselm Parish.

God bless you & Thank you,

Mary Everett

Sister of Father Fitzgerald

Dear Parishioners,

Christmas Bazaar

Our annual Christmas Bazaar will be held this coming Friday and Saturday. Our Ladies of Saint Anselm will transform our Church hall into a Christmas wonderland. The Bazaar offers another opportunity for us to socialize and interact with one another. Please come out and support our Bazaar which offers a nice time for all and raises needed monies for the School.

Thanksgiving Outreach

Our Saint Vincent de Paul Society will coordinate our charitable Thanksgiving outreach. Both our School and CCD students will collect canned food.

Money is also needed so that grocery gift certificates can be purchased. If you are willing and able to do so, please put the money in an envelope (marked “St. Vincent de Paul”) and place it in the collection basket.

Thanksgiving Masses

Tuesday, November 25th 7:00 PM

Thanksgiving Day 9:00 AM

Present State of the Economy adversely affecting some of our Parishioners

Unemployment, lack of work, layoffs have caused some of our families to experience a loss of income.

Our charitable outreach to these families at Thanksgiving and Christmas (food, gifts, and gift cards) will allow them to take the money that they are not spending for these things and use it for utility bills, mortgage payments, etc.

If you know of parishioners in this situation who we can help, please let me or one of the priests or Deacon Whartenby know.

People who are willing to donate to assist these families are asked to see “Thanksgiving Outreach.”

2015 Mass Intention Book

Mass Intentions for 2015 can be arranged at the Parish Center. Announced and Unannounced Masses: the difference between an announced and an unannounced Mass is because the date and time of an announced Mass is scheduled and published, you know when the Mass Intention is being offered. An unannounced Mass Intention is offered but you do not know the date and time. Unannounced Masses are sent to priests and parishes where there is availability. The offering for an Announced Mass and an Unannounced Mass is ten dollars.

Annual Collection – Saint Charles Seminary

The annual collection for Saint Charles Seminary takes place during November. Please note that the Seminary Appeal is a mail appeal and an envelope was mailed to you. Please mail your contribution to the seminary; there will not be a second collection.

Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has been preparing men for the priesthood for over one hundred and seventy years. Our Seminary also offers the Church Ministry program for the laity. The Diaconate Program is also at the Seminary. Many Catholic school teachers, CCD catechists, Religious Sisters and Priests also attend classes at the Seminary. The seminary is also the site for Vocation Discernment Programs, retreats, days of recollection and faith formation programs.

God bless you,

Father Dunleavy

Parish Assembly Notes

On Thursday evening, November 6th, 122 parishioners assembled in Our Lady of Victory Hall. Simply stated, the Pastoral Council had invited members of the Saint Anselm Parish family to come over to sit around and talk.

Catholic parishes today are being called to Pastoral Planning. Pastoral Planning seeks to identify and prioritize ways in which the parish is being called to live out its mission to be Church. A pastoral plan consists of a mission statement, goals and objectives. Parishioners are needed to be engaged in this pastoral process. There are different ways to do this. While some parishes may use questionnaires or surveys, others, such as our parish, have parish assemblies or listening sessions.

During the Assembly, participants were asked to express their thoughts on the parish by answering a series of questions. The questions asked were:

# 1 If Jesus were here today, what words would he give us to direct our future?

Think and consider: Are there words in Scripture that Jesus spoke in his day that he would speak to our parish today to direct our future?Or can we suggest new words or sayings that Jesus would use to speak to us today?

#2. Why do you think the universal Catholic Church exists?

Think about why you think the Church exists. What is the purpose of the Church?

#3. What makes Saint Anselm Parish unique and special?

In your opinion or from your experience or from something you have heard about this parish, what is so special, unique or a strength about this parish?

Before question #4 was asked, demographics and data about the parish were presented. After viewing demographics and listening to pulpit talks regarding 7 Essential Elements found in a Vital Parish, some concerns that we have identified are:

Many registered parishioners are no longer practicing Catholics. A large percentage of parishioners are absent at Sunday Mass. Only 1,000 out 8,000 parishioners attend Church on Sunday – 200 less than last year. What can be done to keep people from drifting away?

What can be done to tell others with whom we have no contact (in the neighborhood and parish) about

Jesus and our Catholic Faith?

Approximately 45% of school age children from Grades 1 to 6 are not receiving religious education. Many children are not receiving religious education after 1st Communion. CCD ends with Level 6 (no CCD Program exists for Grades 7 thru 12). Imagine going thru life with only 6 years of CCD religious education (1 hour a week for 30 weeks) Imagine going thru life with only 6 years of education in math (1 hour a week for 30 weeks)……….

Budget increased by $200,000 this year. What can be done to increase the Church’s revenue? What can be done to lower school tuition so as to sustain/increase school enrollment?

Are there areas where our Parish & School Leadership (Clergy, Pastoral Staff, Organizational Officers) need to improve?

Perhaps you have a concern about our Parish (Church/School) not mentioned, what is it?

#4. From the demographics, what do you suggest should be areas of concentration for the future of St. Anselm

Parish?

Participants at the Assembly wrote their answers to the questions and shared their thoughts with the people sitting with them at their table. All the responses were collected and are now being collated for the Pastoral Council who will read them. The Pastoral Council will prayerfully discern the direction that the Holy Spirit is leading us to take.

If you were not at the Assembly and have some thoughts, answers to the questions (above), please share them with us in writing and send them to the Parish Center to the attention of Father Dunleavy. Thank you. #4-016

Concert Before Christmas

Before the holiday rush sets in, mark your calendars now for our annual parish “Concert Before Christmas” on Saturday, December 20th at 7:30 PM. The program will incorporate Advent & Christmas music, along with several instrumentalists.

This concert is always well attended. Plan now to join us for a memorable evening of music in preparation for the birth of our Lord!

Christmas Giving Tree

We invite all the families of the parish to think of the poor at Christmas. Our Parish Family Christmas Tree is a special way to brighten someone’s Christmas. Next weekend, choose one of the Tree Ornaments, which will indicate gender, age and size for a gift to be purchased. When you wrap your gift, please secure the ornament to the outside of the package. Place the gift under the tree by 2:00 PM December 14th. All gifts will be distributed by the St. Vincent DePaul Society in the name of St. Anselm Parish. Thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness.

Vincentian Message…

The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need do is be faithful in “small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given.

When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, you are sharing God’s extravagant love.

Poor Man’s Supper

Thanksgiving Mass

On Tuesday, November 25th, we will have our annual Poor Man’s Supper at 5:30 PM in the Parish Hall followed by a Thanksgiving Mass in Church at 7:00 PM. We will serve supper from 5:30 PM until 6:30 PM. All are invited. Sometimes it is hard to imagine that in our country, a land of plenty, there could be so much want and hunger. All are invited. The goal of our Poor Man’s Supper is two-fold: first, to draw attention to the plight of those who hunger and second, in some small way alleviate that hunger in our area. You are asked not to eat at home before coming to the supper. The meal will be meager (soup and bread) but it will be sufficient. If there is a “want” for more eating, our first goal is achieved. This sharp contrast to the plenty of Thanksgiving Day will cause us to remember those who have so little. Non-perishable foods that have been collected will be given to the needy, thus fulfilling our second goal.
