CLASSIFIED SENATE MEETING MINUTES

May 11, 2016

11:30am– 12:30pm

Location: Student Center - Boardroom

Present: Mary Goodall, Lisa Carrillo, Christina Overmiller, Diana Montijo, Jonathan Iwamiya, Beth Madigan, Lynn Grimstad, Carissa Thomas, Bernice Foster, Rachel Douglas arrived at 11:50 a.m.

Excused:Tamara Floyd

Unexcused/Absent:Nicole Griggs, Ruby Dean-Smith (resigned), Liz Johnson, Joy Baldwin, Daniel Avegalio, Vita Lavrushchak, and Jason Ralphs.

CALL TO ORDER:11:35 a.m. Quorum confirmed with eight members in attendance, plus President Mary Goodall.

  1. APPROVE AGENDA: President Goodall asked for additions to the agenda. Senator Madigan added an announcement under Open Forum. Call for consensus. Ayes: 8; Nays: None; Abstain: None.
  2. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Carrillo reported the Foundation account at $3,908.34; Senate account at $4,559.25; profit from Professional Development Conference raffle was $271.00. Expenses incurred included $500 for the Classified of the Year Award. Certificates, photos, Board of Recognition were covered by Dean of Fine & Applied Arts Kale Braden. Outstanding bills include the photo booth invoice which will be processed, and an invoice from the Winter Luncheon is missing. Vouchers from the baseball game to pay for the teams’ lunches were $33.00.

AGENDA ITEMS:

  1. Elections – upcoming elections; need to send something out
  2. Professional Development Conference – Guest Jeanne Reed took this spot to speak to Classified Senate regarding Planning Development Coordination Council (PDCC). History of PDCC shows this committee to not be functional: not fulfilling its mission; only distributing funds. Ad Hoc committee was formed comprised of 9 members: 3 management; 3 classified; and 3 faculty. President Thomas Greene suggested at the first meeting that the committee set universal goals. Ms. Reed handed out the draft of the “Professional Development Ad Hoc Group Report – Spring 2016” for the Senate’s review pointing out the area of Classified Staff where examples of classified activities are listed.
  3. Emails concerning future Professional Development events: President Goodall gave an update on the memo sent out by the President regarding future PD events, and indicated that Ray Di Guilio is meeting with Thomas Greene on this matter of controversy.
  4. Professional Development Survey: nothing to report as of this meeting
  5. Achieving the Dream: Past President Tamara Floyd is continuing work on a survey. Next meeting is scheduled for May 24 from 1 – 3 p.m. in the CTL conference room. All are welcome.
  6. New Classified Academy and survey: nothing to report
  7. Pride Center Resolution: A revised version of the original – Resolution no. 2015-001 urging ARC’s administration to partner with the LGBTQ subcommittee to “institutionalize a permanent solution” that will address “inequities faced by the LGBTQ community.” The resolution was revised to omit the request for administration to allocate funds for a physical space for LGBTQ activities.
  8. Graduation: Senate Classified President is invited to give a speech at graduation. Mary solicited ideas as to what message we want to give the graduating class. Discussion.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  5. Vice President Christina Overmiller announced that she needs assistance in handing out Certificates to nominees at the upcoming luncheon for Person of the Year Nominees.
  6. Senator Beth Madigan announced that there will be a retirement party for Ray Di Guilio.
  7. Mary Goodall raised the subject of extending the Classified Senate meetings, and there was consensus that one hour is too short, and that 1 ½ hours was needed to conduct business.
