Soccer Playing Field
FIFA is the governing body of Soccer World Wide
- 11 players on the field at a time for a team. Example: 5-3-2-1 or 4-3-3-1
- Forwards – Work together to score. Left forward should be the fasteston team.
- Halfbacks – Sometimes join them but mostly try to get the ball back when it is lost to the opponents. Center halfback is most likely to both play defense and score
- Fullbacks – Stop scoring threats
- Goalie - Last line of defense
- Midfielders – offense and defense – plays 18yard line to 8 yard line
- Defender—plays on the defensive end of field
- Sweeper – the last midfielder before goalie –“sweeps ball away
Definitions
- Corner Kick – Taken by the offense when the defense kicks the ball out over the goal line.
- Direct Free Kick – A free place kick due to a foul that can score directly from the kicker’s foot.
- Dribbling – Method of moving the ball by short kicks, keeping the ball in control.
- Goalkeeper – Person who can pick up the ball without drawing a foul card.
- Goalie Punt – After stopping a scoring threat the goalie may punt the ball downfield.
- Heading – Directing the ball with the forehead. Keep your eyes up, get under the ball.
- Indirect Free Kick – A free kick due to a foul that has to touch another player from either team before a goal can be scored.
- Offside – An attacker who is ahead of the ball and nearer to the opponents’ goal line than at least two defenders when the ball is passed (the goalie counting as one). The player is not offside if the ball is not passed to her. Player can’t be offside on a Throw-In.
- Penalty Area – If a foul resulting in a direct kick is committed in this area a penalty kick will be awarded to the offensive team. The goalie may use her hands in this area.
- Penalty kick – Spot twelve yards from the goal where a direct kick is taken with all other players except the person taking the kick and the goalie out of the penalty area.
- Throw-in – Method of starting play when the whole ball goes over the sideline. Both feet must be in contact with the ground with one at least partially on the sideline. The ball must be thrown with two hands over the head.
- Trapping – The act of stopping the ball and bringing it under your control by use of feet
- Tackling –To try to take the ball from an opponent one on one.
- Outlet Pass - Outlet passes move the ball away from the goal to the side of the field..
- Centering – When the attacking team is near the goal and passes fromthe wing position to the center of the field to put the ball in scoring position.
- If goalie knocks ball out it is a corner kick.
