Core competencies and standards for WorldSkills UK Skills Competitions activities / Qualifier / UK Final / Team UK
Competency / Elements of Electrical installation, ability to follow a plan when installing equipment onto the control station / x
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
·  Prepare and maintain a safe, tidy efficient work area
·  Plan prepare and complete each task in the time allocated
Competency / Automation installation, get the system fully operational / x
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
·  Carry out the system design specified
·  Assemble the panel according to the documentation
·  Install, setup and make any necessary adjustment to the system
Competency / Ability to communicate with and show control of Siemens hardware
·  Understand the function, the structure and the operating principles of PLCs
·  Understand the structure and function of industrial controllers (PLCs)
·  Understanding of the configuration of the industrial controller and how a software program relates to a machine action. / x / x
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
·  Connect the PLC with the Drive unit
·  Make the necessary configuration of the industrial controller
Competency / Understand the design and operational characteristics of a PLC system and fault finding using PLC programs and Process & Instrumentation diagrams.
·  Understanding of programming an industrial software program
·  Understand how a software program relates to a machine action or a process. / x / x
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
·  Correctly interpret PLC program in terms of its effects on plant equipment.
·  Act safely in regard to program changes, as if they were dealing with real world plant scenarios.
Competency / Understand PLC information and communication techniques and fault finding to program level, using the software’s diagnostic utilities effectively. / x / x
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
·  Demonstrate effective and safe fault-finding strategies
·  Show effective use of the available diagnostic utilities
Competency / Be able to apply programming techniques for visualisation devices (HMIs) These shall include:
·  Analog and Discrete Alarms
·  Presentation of graphics objects
·  Presentation of tag value information in various formats including Trend displays
·  User administration / x / x
Standards / Competitors shall show effective management and organisation of displayed information, using appropriate screen navigation and update speeds.
Competency / Understand alternative implementations of programmable control (PLC Simulation) / x / x
Standards / Competitors shall demonstrate understanding of simulation modes by manipulating the simulated variables within appropriate limits.
Competency / Be competent using power tools, required when installing and cutting enclosures and trucking (jigsaw, drill, tank cutter) / x
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
·  Select and use all equipment safely and in compliance with manufacturer’s instructions and health and safety standards
·  Identify and use the appropriate personal protective equipment
work safely within their work/competition environment

Note: Core Competencies are tested, identified and measured as recognition of the competition level and duration. The severity of the marking schedule is regulated in relation to WorldSkills international standards as follows:

·  Heats circa 50%

·  National circa 75%

·  Team UK 100%
