Lesson Goal: / Students will understand how the Salem Witch Trials affected the culture and history of colonial America.
Activator: / 1. In teams discuss three interesting facts you learned about the Salem Witch Trials from the station activity last week.
2. Complete a Think, Pair Share Chart. Make sure to follow the guidelines of a team in completing the chart.
Performance Tasks: / 1. Students will organize all their notes and assignments they completed last week for station activities.
2. Teacher will guide the students through a Whole Group Share on the men and women who were accused of being witches. Selected students will share with the class about the character they researched from the Transcript Station. They will identify the person, the accuser and what the alleged did.
3. Using the notes compiled last week, students will complete a quiz over the Salem Witch Trials and characters.
Summarizer: / Ticket Out Door. What’s your understanding of what happened in America in the 1950s during the McCarthyism scare? Use your notes and memory from last week’s video in answering this question. The video can be watched on Friday’s Edmodo post.

EQ: / Why did Arthur Miller use the Salem Witch Trials for his setting of his modern play The Crucible?
Lesson Goal: / Students will analyze a modern drama to see how the author develops the characters, action and setting to portray an allegorical representation of America in the 1950s.
Activator: / Download the drama The Crucible into iBooks.
Performance Tasks: / 1. Students will create a short Keynote about the life of Arthur Miller.
2. Start by searching for credible sources about Arthur Miller’s life, then take notes about basic biographical information.
3. After you research, create the Keynote that has a title slide (Full name, born-died dates, picture and team names), early life and education, major works, awards, involvement with Marilyn Monroe and involvement with HUAC.
4. In addition to the title slide, at least two more slides need to include photos.
5. If Keynote is not available, Popplet, PicCollage or similar app can be used.
6. After 20-30 minutes, direct instruction by teacher about Arthur Miller’s story The Crucible and its context in 1950s America.

Lesson Goal: / Students will be to understand some of the vocabulary and terminology used in colonial America as it pertains to a theocratic society. This will help in understanding the historical context of the play The Crucible.
Activator: / Individually define a set of 15 vocabulary words used frequently in the text of The Crucible. Words are attached. Create a Popplet or use Notes app to record these definitions.
Performance Tasks: / 1. Direct instruction by teacher over the play The Crucible. Students will take notes over the background and plot of the drama.
2. Volunteers will be selected to read aloud the play tomorrow in class. Characters will be posted for students to see and make their selections. We will read Act 1 over the next two days.
Summarizer: / Those selected as characters need to review the parts by looking at the play in iBooks.

Activator: / In teams complete a 3-2-1 on the character Abigail Williams. Identify three facts about the historical Abigail, two people she accused of being witches (look back at transcripts) and one fact about the girl portrayed in the drama.
Performance Tasks: / 1. Teacher led reading of the play with students chosen as characters.
2. Student actors will sit in the middle row of desks to distinguish themselves from rest of class.
3. Teacher will stop at certain scenes in the play and ask questions and clarify plot and character actions.
Summarizer: / Ticket Out the Door: In two sentences describe what is happening in the play from today’s reading.
