STREET FIGHT OF THE CENTURY AT THE CLIPSAL 500 ADELAIDE
‘It’s going to be the street fight of the century. The battle for the Clipsal 500 Adelaide should be the best and toughest ever’.
The words of motor racing aficionado and Clipsal 500 Adelaide Media Manager Mike Drewer and he should know.
Drewer covered all eleven Formula 1 Grands Prix in Adelaide from 1985 and has witnessed the twelve V8 Supercar races held thus far on the demanding street circuit, and he predicts that fans are in for a stunning battle.
‘You only have to look at the main combatants. James Courtney won last year’s title in a Ford and has now moved to the Holden Racing Team while the former Champion Jamie Whincup is still seething at losing the title given he won more races in 2010.
Then you have last year’s Clipsal 500 Adelaide winner Garth Tander not only having to beat the rest of the field, but also having to beat his new team mate Courtney.
The battle between Whincup and Courtney has now reached epic proportions given that they have won one race each at the opening round of the season in Abu Dhabi before coming to Adelaide’, Drewer says.
‘As for the Ford teams, Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom from Ford Performance Racing has said he plans to “take no prisoners” with a new aggressive driving style while the Stone Brothers Ford Team with its trio of drivers Shane Van Gisbergen, Alex Davison and South Australia’s Tim Slade are also in brilliant form. Will Davison, new at FPR, will also have to be in the mix.
Add to all of this, drivers like Steve Johnson and James Moffat son of the legendary Allan Moffat driving for Ford Dick Johnson Racing, and the mercurial Craig Lowndes, plus the Kelly Brothers, and a charging Jason Bright and you have the ingredients for some of the best racing ever to be seen in Adelaide’.
Fans at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide also have the advantage of seeing two 250 kilometre races for the V8 Supercars on both the Saturday and Sunday of the event.

‘It’s like two world title bouts on the same week-end. It will be a rumble in Adelaide’s concrete jungle’, Drewer adds.
The four day motor sport carnival to be held from March 17-20 also features night competition for the exotic Australian GT Championship cars, Fujitsu V8’s, V8 Utes, Touring Car Masters, Aussie Racing Cars, and the open-wheeler Formula Fords.
Four nights of concerts are also part of this year’s activities with acts including the hit SBS TV RocKwiz Show live on stage, Birds of Tokyo, Gyroscope, Mondo Rock, Leo Sayer, Uncanny X-Men, Pseudo Echo, Doobie Brothers and The Sweet.
The ‘street fight of the century’ for the 2011 Clipsal 500 Adelaide has been captured in a new event poster featuring major combatants James Courtney and Jamie Whincup and in a radio campaign that features Courtney, Whincup and Mark Winterbottom.
