1)COURSE NUMBER:146_ _COURSE NAME: Speech and Language Consortium: Using Effective Practices to Address Disabilities in Communication

3)CRITERIA OF PARTICIPATION:Participants should be speech and language pathologists (SLPs) who work with school-aged children who have been identified as having a disability in one of more areas of communication (language, fluency, voice, articulation).
4)GOALS ADDRESSED: The course is designed to support SLPs to become more effective in providing therapy to students with disabilities in the area of communication.
5)IMPROVEMENT PRACTICES: SLPs will be given the opportunity to improve their own speech-language therapy techniques and practices by actively participating in training provided through a variety of diverse training modules (i.e. face-to-face, video, online). The training will address one or more areas of communication. SLPs will participate in formal training sessions followed by the opportunity to interact with each other and model new or innovative techniques learned during the sessions or currently used in their therapy settings.
6)COMPETENCIES: SLPs will become more effective in their rolesand have an increasingly positive impact on students’ communication skills. SLPs will demonstrate effectiveness by:
a)Identifying, modeling, and assessing appropriate therapy techniques and practices to support their students
b)Demonstrating their ability to apply varying techniques and practices
c)Monitoring student performance for mastery
7)PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: As a result of this course, SLPs will demonstrate their ability to:
a)Plan instructional strategies for facilitating students’ acquisition of critical communication skills
b)Incorporate strategies into their daily therapy
c)Assess effectiveness based on student performance
d)Revise strategies to meet the needs of individual students
8)PREPARATION PHASE: This course will be a minimum of 10 clock hours over two days of attendance, excluding time for allocated meals.
9)COURSE ASSESSMENT: Mastery verification has been selected in lieu of on-the-job assessment due to the nature of the knowledge and skills acquired during this course. Competencies will be assessed through the completion of an end-of-course assessment and by skills modeled in the class.
