Gainful Employment Narrative – Culinary Assistant Diploma Program
1. Institution Name – Milwaukee Area Technical College
2. OPEID - 00386600
3. Program Name – Culinary Assistant
Program CIP Code – 12.0503
4. The Culinary Assistant Diploma Program is replacing the Food Service Diploma Program which was previously approved for Title IV funding. The modifications to the new program (Culinary Assistant) are intended to upgrade the courses from diploma level to associate degree level, and allow for laddering into the Culinary Arts Associate Degree Program. It is designed so that after students complete their first year of Culinary Assistant Diploma, they will be eligible to ladder into the third semester of the Culinary Arts Associate Degree Program. These courses will also transfer into the other Hospitality Programs and allow students more program flexibility.
5. Milwaukee Area Technical College referenced Economic Modeling Specialists,
Inc. (www.economicmodeling.com) to confirm job growth regarding Culinary Assistant positions in the region. Per Economic Modeling Specialists Inc. there will be a 5% job growth rate (15,978 openings) for the region (Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Washington, and Waukesha Counties), a 5% increase in job openings for the state, and a national increase of 8% from 2010 to 2015.
The employment change for cooks and food preparation workers is expected to increase by 6% of the 2008-2018. Among food services and drinking places, special food services, which include caterers and food service operators who often provide meals in hospitals, office building, or sporting venues on a contract basis, are expected to grow the fastest during the projection period. These companies typically employ large numbers of cafeteria and institution cooks and other cooks who perform cooking duties; employment in these occupations is expected to grow 10 percent (about as fast as the average), and 16 percent (faster than the average), respectively. (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition, www.bls.gov/oco/ocos331.thm).
6. Information regarding job wages for the Culinary Assistant Program was gathered through Economic Modeling Specialist, Inc (www.economicmodeling.com), and the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Regional median hourly earnings (2010) was $9.35 per hour, state median hourly earnings (2010) $9.12, and national median hourly earnings (2010) was $9.41.
