Read Directions to Get to a Location

CLB Level: 3
Essential Skills Focus: DocumentUse (read a map/written directions, write simple directions), Oral Communication (Listening – following instructions – this activity can be changed into a listening activity)
Task: Read written directions on how to get to a location
Purpose: Students will
  • Be able to read and understand a map
  • Follow written directions to get to a location
Materials: Teacher’s Instructions Handout (attached), student Handout (attached) (adapt for your city or town)
Learning Style: Visual, auditory, kinaesthetic
Time: 3-4 lessons / Method:
  1. Pre-teach vocabulary:
  2. Head east on ______.
  3. Turn right/left at ______. Go north on_____.
  4. Head toward ______. Continue on ______.
  5. Pass ______. Hit St. Mary Ave.
  6. Tracks, set of lights, etc.
  7. Draw a simplified map on the board with the streets you will use in activity A. Use this simplified map to teach the vocabulary and practice directions. As a whole group activity start by giving students one-to two step
instructions. Bring students to the board and have them take turns following your one-to two step directions. Gradually, increase the number of steps. Each day/lesson take them back to the same map and increase the length of the directions using the vocabulary they learned. It might take students a few lessons to feel comfortable
following directions.
  1. Now, using a real map, have students look at the map carefully and see if they recognize the streets they had been working on when using the simplified map. Ask them to compare the real map and the teacher-made version. Have them point out the differences and similarities. Ask them to find the streets you will be using in activity A (attached).
  2. Start with simple directions again as in the previous activity and gradually increase the number of steps. Write the directions on the board. Read and do a few sets of directions together. Have students take turns following directions. Have them practice similar directions as in activity A (attached) working in pairs. And finally, have them try doing activity A.
Follow Up:Students can write directions from one
location to another of their choice (e.g. from home to
school). In pairs they switch written directions and
mark their starting points for each other. Students
read the directions and see if they can get to the
right destination.
Debrief/Transfer: Do a search. Students go around
the classroom asking if people have used written
directions before, if they would use them now, and if
yes, where or when would they use them?
