Tips for Making Cards and Tags with the
Our Memories For Life Love Collection
By Debbie Hutchings, Our Memories For Life Distributor
Overview: You can make up to 20 cards and at least 12 Gift Tags using one package of Designer Cardstock and one package of Border Strips. The Stickers add more decoration and fun! Two cards
(4 ¼” x 11”) are cut from each piece of cardstock. The leftover 3 ½” x 12” piece is used to decorate the cards and make the gift tags. You will cut your Border Maker strips from this piece as well. As you go, keep your scraps from the Designer Cardstock and Border Strips to use on your cards and tags.
Start by cutting each piece of Designer Cardstock at 4 ¼”and 8 ½”. This will give you 2 – 4 ¼” x 12” pieces and one 3 ½” x 12” piece from each Designer Paper. Set aside all of your 3 ½” x 12” pieces…this is important so they don’t get mixed up. Trim 1” off all of the 4 1/4 “ x 12” pieces so that they are all 4 1/4” x 11”. These are your card bases. Save the 1” strips for decorating your cards.
Score and fold each piece of cardstock at 5 ½”. See note below on scoring.* You now have all your cards ready for decorating.
Start matching the Love Collection Designer Border Strips to the card bases according to what you like. Note that the OMFL Designer Cardstock and Border Strips have designs on both sides and you may want to use one side of the Cardstock or Border Strips for one card and the other side for another.
Now you can use the card samples for inspiration to create your cards. Look at the designs on the Border Strips carefully as you will be able to make two, sometimes three, cards from one Border Strip. It helps to make a few cards to get started and then you can start incorporating the scraps into your cards.
*Since the Designer Cardstock has a white core, sometimes the fold line of the card will “break” and the white core shows through. If this happens, score and fold a piece of lighter color Designer Cardstock (i.e. 4 ¼” x 1 ½”, scored at ¾”) and put it over the fold of the card and incorporate this into the design of your card. The “This is Love” card with the boy and girl on it is an example of this. The darker color cardstock is more prone to be noticeable. Using a trimmer with a scoring blade to score your card can help minimize the white core showing through. You can also use a ruler and embossing tool to make your score line, but the smallest size head on the tool is best. Be aware that some of the scoring boards on the market do not work well because the tools are too thick and cause more breakage. You can also smooth over the folded edge with your fingers to smooth out the fibers of the paper. Sometimes this is all that is needed.
