INSTITUTION PROFILE

The Velammal Educational Trust is a registered non-minority service organization established in the year 1986 by our honorable Chairman, Thiru. M.V. Muthuramalingam to inculcate among the youth a sense of discipline which is important to mould them into useful and capable citizens. The watch words of the Trust are "Dedication, Determination and Distinction".

Velammal Engineering College was established in the year 1995-96 to impart quality education. It is a self financing non-minority institution, affiliated to Anna University and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

OBJECTIVES

A number of unexplored domains are available to the scholars to pursue their research. The objective of this Workshop is to develop the basic skills that are essential to become a successful researcher. The aim of the workshop is to impart the knowledge on various research methodologies in all the fields of engineering & technology. In addition, the objective of the workshop is to enhance the understanding of theoretical & practical facets of research.

THE OUTLINE OF THE WORKSHOP

RESEARCH PREPARATION AND PLAN

Understanding goals of the research work. Techniques found for generating research topics. Topic selection and justification. Development of a research proposal.

RESEARCH SOURCES AND REVIEW

Source of research information. Goals of literature review. Literature search. On-line data base search tools. Engineering index. Citation science index. World Wide Web.

ACADEMIC WRITING AND ORAL PRESENTATION

Elements of Style. Thesis/Proposal Organization. Journal and Conference Papers writing. Case studies. Latex. Elements of excellent present: Preparation, Visual and Delivery. Oral Communication and question handling.

RESEARCH ETHICS

Engineering ethics, research ethics, plagiarism, duplication etc. Case studies. What is the right approach in research?

GENERAL ADVICE TO Ph.D., STUDENTS

This will cover the general advice to Ph.D students, tips to be a good researcher and how to manage the Ph.D process.

QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR DATA ANALYSIS

Data organization and sampling determination. Exploratory data analysis. Correlation methods and validation. Data reduction and transformations. Data presentation and interpretation. Statistical hypothesis. Hypothesis tests. Goodness of fit. Probability plotting. Regression analysis.
