Warriors around the world, retirees and friends,
It is awesome to have the opportunity to address you all once again. There is not a day that goes by in which I am not thankful to be an AB and part of one of the greatest organizations in the entire world! The holiday season is upon us and there is definitely a lot of cheer in the air! This is the time to reflect on the good times that we have shared with friends, family and Shipmates as well as letting them know how awesome they are and how much we appreciate them.
The 2013 ABMA Working Group Symposium was a huge success and we were able to submit agenda items that are relevant to us as AB’s and they will definitely help as we continue to defend freedom and democracy around the world. I would like to thank you all for your faithful participation in the workshops and your keen insight on safety and efficiency throughout the Aviation Enterprise. I would also like to thank the vendors that continue to support us and for going above and beyond in their quest to provide the most innovative and user-friendly gear, equipment and valuable accessories.
The San Diego Chapter is gearing up for an Awesome ABMA Working Group Symposium in August 2014. Let’s start planning now and work towards submitting agenda items, AB of the Year packages, Regina P. Mills Leadership Award packages, Scholarship packages as well as Posthumous and Living Legend packages. Start submitting your TAD requests now to ensure proper funding is allocated for this very important event.
You all are doing a wonderful job in your many places around the world. I am very proud to be an AB and help make a positive impact at the command, throughout the Navy and even the world! Thanks and keep up the great work! ONE TEAM…ONE FIGHT!!!

NEWS FROM YOUR TREASURER/MEMBERSHIP CHAIR
First and foremost,
I wish to Thank our Tidewater Chapter for a successful Professional Working Group Conference in Chesapeake. Especially within this group were the sailors from USS Abraham Lincoln’s Air Department, and the USS Theodore Roosevelt’s Air Department, under the lead of ABECS Frank Bartanowitz who Greatly Assisted me by Totally and Professionally taking the ball and running the Membership/Registration tables. My life was made easier by these people. Their performance makes me want to re-enlist. ALL OF YOU MADE ME PROUD TO BE AN AB!!!! Looking forward to San Diego in 2014(although I probably will not be able to attend. More to follow on why).
A HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2012 LIVING LEGEND, CWO2 RETIRED, CAFSU RETIRED & ABMA LIFE MEMBER WILLIAM J. MICKLOS………….AND OUR 2013 LIVING LEGEND, CDR RETIRED & ABMA LIFE MEMBER PAUL E. BARNICLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Missing your new/renewed Membership Cards? Getting a lot of Memberships/Renewals on-line through our website. Not getting paid for these Memberships/Renewals. No Pay = No Card. Will try to include a list of non-payee’s in this newsletter.
A lot of folks have been asking, why no Newsgrams etc., from Stoney? A lot of you know that I have had problems with my legs over the years from bouts with Cellulitis. I get this affliction when I injure/break the skin on my legs. The skin has and continues to regenerate thinly as a result of my taking Coumadin, a blood thinner, since my Congestive Heart Failure(CHF) in March of 1995. For the most part, the resulting wounds heal, albeit slowly. Couple that with Diabetes (I have Type II), and sometimes the wounds do not heal. My current situation, involves a wound on the inside of my left leg at the ankle bone which has not healed in over a year. I am currently under the care of a Wound Care Clinic. The wound has had its healing/not-healing scenarios. Currently, we are slowly healing. This scenario requires me to be bedridden(since late August) 22 hours a day with the leg elevated and twice weekly bandage changes plus air compression boots, twice a day for an hour for both legs. A hard but necessary act to follow. This has interfered with my ability to process memberships, but trying to catch up. Unable to sit at my computer table for any length of time. I am pursuing other avenues of healing with my Brother Bill doing a majority of the leg work including working with the Vascular Department Surgeons to pursue the other avenues as this is written. Several AB’s have also indicated that I pursue all avenues available, which I am doing. Many Thanks to ABCM Retired Lanny & Marie Vines, CDR’s Retired Bob & Mary Jo Parsons, Pres and Judy Jones, for their support and love and ABCS Retired Phil & Sandie Starkey and Grand-daughter Gabby who stopped by over the Thanksgiving weekend, to name a few. This helps my morale. I shall be steadfast during the healing period. Thanks for ALL your support and prayers. I am not a very religious person, but will gladly accept any prayers. Having just turned 62 (12/23), I am too young to bail out now. I am keeping a very positive attitude.
NOTE: If you sent an e-mail/or called me with no response, during this period of time, please e-mail me with sent date of e-mail/phone call( ), so I can resurrect this communication and I’ll respond to you.
All for now………………
Stoney
Hello All,
I hope you all are doing well. I am currently working with Doug Thornton who will take over the Secretary position. If has been a pleasure to serve you.
Sincerely
Donna Dodson
Greetings Fellow AB’s;
I hope this Newsletter is finding you and your family in the very best of health and doing quite well!
I want to congratulate the AB’s of the Tidewater Chapter for doing such an outstanding job on the 2013 Symposium/ Professional Working Group Conference in Chesapeake, Virginia. I had an awesome time there, as I’m sure those that were in attendance did as well.
I know the AB’s of the San Diego Chapter are very busy getting things ready for next year’s Symposium/ Professional Working Group Conference in San Diego, California. The FORTY-FOURTH AVIATION BOATSWAIN’S MATES ASSOCIATION (ABMA) SPONSORED SYMPOSIUM/ PROFESSIONAL WORKING GROUP CONFERENCE dates and location have not yet been determined. I talked with CDR Frank Fuentes, the chairman for the upcoming Symposium/Professional Working Group Conference and they are trying for the week of 11-14 August, however, this is not confirmed as of yet. They should have a confirmed date and location by the middle of January. As soon as we have information we will get the word out as best as we can.
Let’s continue to bring in the junior AB’s and get them involved.
Keep your head on a swivel and stay safe! God bless each and every one of you and may God bless America. Looking forward to seeing you in San Diego, California next year!
A Fellow AB;

Public Affairs Officer
Tidewater Chapter ABMA
Past President: LCDR Erick Stroud
New President: ABECS Frank Bartanowitz
Vice President: ABHC Felicia Perez
Treasurer: CWO4 (Ret) Terry New
Secretary: ABEAA Daniel Perez
Greetings from the Tidewater Chapter! I would like to start by congratulating our newest officers in the Tidewater Chapter. We recently held elections and the competition was extremely tight and the talent was equally represented. There were approximately 200 personnel at our most recent meeting which was held at CNATTU Norfolk. That’s my segue into saying a great big THANKS to CNATTU Norfolk for always opening their doors to the ABMA.
Senior Bart and his crew have huge plans for the Tidewater Shipmates and there is no better Shipmate and American that I would rather pass the Chapter to. I would also like to give a huge shout out to the wonderful Shipmates that helped with the Symposium this year. Terry New was and is the go-to-guy with sufficient historical data and knowledge beyond finite expectations.
LCDR Erick Stroud
Past Tidewater Chapter President
Jacksonville Chapter
Greetings to all from Jacksonville,
I would like to first off congratulate the 2013 National President Lt. Erick Stroud.
and on behalf of the Jacksonville Chapter, we wish him all the best in the up-coming year.
Also would like to send a B.Z. to the outgoing and incoming Presidents for an outstanding job at this year’s working group / symposium, under abnormal and difficult circumstances. I would also like to publicly recognize CDR Hernandez among others, for going the extra mile and taking the lead in reminding the Navy of the value of our working group /symposium and of our Association.
Until next time...Full Speed Ahead

From the ABMA Chaplain:
Warriors around the World,
I greet you in the name of the Most High! This is a wonderful time of year no matter what you call it. We are truly blessed to serve or have served with so many wonderful and caring Shipmates. Part of our job is to watch out for one another and to provide help when needed. I don’t know what Cain was thinking but we are our Brother’s keeper and it is up to us to “have their backs”. We also know that “iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens the countenance of a friend” (Proverbs 27:17). We have several young AB’s that need us during this time of year and I applaud you for seeking out those that may not have adequate leave, transportation or funds to travel. This will set the standard and precedence of our AB faithfulness to support and help one another.
As we defend freedom and democracy around the world, I challenge you all to continue to lift one another up in prayer and commit a special prayer for our brothers and sisters in harm’s way and currently on watch. Do the right thing and make the right decisions and you will get the right results!!!! Feed the faith and starve the doubt!!! "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever." (Jude 1:24-25)

2013 LIVING LEGEND COMMANDER PAUL BARNICLE
Commander Paul Barnicle, served on the USS HANCOCK from September 1957 to January 1960 as the Flight Deck CPO. He received his LDO Commission in January 1960 and had a successful career. He retired with the rank of CDR in 1978 after 30 years, 21 of them were on carriers. On eight carriers he was on the flight deck as blue shirt, yellow shirt, Chief Petty Officer, Assistant to Aircraft Handling Officer, Flight Deck Officer, and Catapult Officer and fleeted up aboard the CORAL SEA AND AMERICA to the Aircraft Handler Officer. Paul proudly served our Navy for over 30 years and since his retirement in 1978 he has faithfully served the ABMA for over 35 years. He is active member of the Tidewater Chapter and even with numerous health issues continues to be an involved with chapter activities, functions and meetings. He remains a mentor and inspiration to many retired and active duty senior officer and enlisted Aviation Boatswain’s Mates.
A few of his achievments were. On USS ORISKANY CV 34 AB1 Barnicle was the only First Class in the Division. He supervised the installation of the Heavy End Aviation Fuels (HAEF) system. Under his leadership ORISKANY was the first ship to operate with the HEAF system in the Fleet.
On USS CORAL Sea, LT Barnicle was told by one of his Blue Shirts parking airplanes in fly one was a major problem. The Blue Shirt asked “Why don’t we spot the first plane to land on the starboard side aft of the starboard catapult. This would allow the first plane to be refueled, re-armed and ready to go thus removing the problem with trying to move, refuel and re-arm the planes parked forward of the last few planes to land”. LT Barnicle briefed the plan to the Air Boss and Captain and they received permission to try it. It has since become a standard practice on all carriers. Assisted in establishing first Officer In Charge (OIC) billet COMNAVAIRLANT Aircraft Handling Team (1973).
Instrumental in writing the flight deck portion of CV NATOPS (1973)
Completed three tours as the Aircraft Handling Officer on USS AMERICA CVA 66,
USS NIMITZ CV(N) 68 Pre Commissioning crew, USS INDEPENDENCE CV 62.
In 1977 he became the first LDO to serve as Ships Project Manager, NAVAIRSYSCOM this billet had been previously only manned by Aviators.
