Behaviour Based Safety Management

25 – 26 September 2018: Mumbai

PERSPECTIVE

Management practices like Engineering Revision, Instructions, Personal Adjustment and Discipline, etc. have resulted in improving Safety Standards and reducing unsafe situations and accidents. Now there is a need to find and apply newer methods to reach the target of zero accident. Keeping in view of the need, in the recent past safety professionals have developed a new approach known as “Behaviour Based-Safety”. This approach is based on successive years of research which showed that about 80% of accidents at the workplace are caused by unsafe behaviours.

It promotes pro-active & practical approach to genuinely help people to follow safe work practice on the job. In this approach Behaviour is considered as a base for improving safety performance because it is observable, definable & measurable also. Behaviours on the job are indicators of probable injuries and safety performance. The Behaviour-Based Safety Management (BBSM) approach is different from traditional system approach and process approach, and focuses on one of the main aspects of safety problem i.e. At-Risk behaviour of people, which is a major cause of majority of accidents or injuries. The BBSM technique will serve as a tool to correct unsafe behaviour of people and achieve desired safe standard
