X-3 Product Recall
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As always, the safety and security of students is of utmost interest to us at the Calgary Board of Education. I am writing to inform you of the recall of a product from our schools.
This communication is to inform you that some X-3 Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer which may be used in your child’s school has been voluntarily recalled by its manufacturer Avmor Ltd. and Health Canada.
There is no indication that the hand sanitizer poses a health risk. The manufacturer has voluntarily recalled the product as a precautionary measure because it is being used in schools. A contaminant was found in another of Avmor Ltd.’s products, Antimicrobial Foaming Hand Soap (Triclosan 0.3 per cent), which is manufactured in the same plant and using the same equipment as the hand sanitizer. CBE schools do not use Antimicrobial Foaming Hand Soap.
Avmor reports that no adverse reactions involving the use of any of these products have been reported to Avmor or to Health Canada.
As a result of the recall, the Calgary Board of Education is removing all of the hand sanitizer product affected by the recall from schools. Students and employees are being asked to use soap and water or the alternative hand sanitizer which will be provided. Arrangements are in place to have X-3 hand sanitizer unaffected by the recall distributed to schools.
At least 172 CBE schools use the X-3 hand sanitizer, usually because there are classrooms and areas in schools that may not have ready access to water for hand washing. However, all CBE schools are being contacted to ensure that the product affected by the recall is removed and replaced.
