Job Title:Town Crier

Job purpose: Provide Town Crier duties for Westbury Town Council

Scope of job:
To work at events and functions on behalf of Westbury Town Council together with providing your services at events arranged by other organisations in and around the community area.
Costume
The appointee will receive items of clothing and equipment in order to perform their
duties. These will remain the property of Westbury Town Council and must be returned should you resign from the role. The Costume must be kept of a clean and fine appearance.
Skills
The successful applicant will be expected to have, and to develop, a good local
knowledge with an understanding of the town and its history, to answer queries from
visitors to help locate cafes, toilets, local attractions etc. It is hoped you will be able
to make easy conversation with anyone seeking assistance during your duties. Your
cries must be in good taste and in the spirit of the role.
Responsibility
The appointee represents Westbury and its residents so you are expected to
maintain a high standard of appropriate behaviour and courtesy at all times during
your duties, and at any competitions.
Duties- Civic events
It is anticipated you will attend the following events:
- Remembrance Day Parade
- Mayor’s Civic reception
- Summer Fayre (Biannual)
- Christmas Street Event
- Christmas Light switch on
- Together with any event the Town Council are likely to arrange
You will liaise with the Town Clerk, who will be your Line Manager, regarding all
matters concerning your role in which the Town Council’s events take priority..
Other local events
It is anticipated you will be invited to perform cries throughout the year promoting
various charitable events (coffee mornings, fetes etc). Other organisations in the community area may also wish to use your services at their summer fetes.
Attendance at these will be at your own discretion and subject to authority from the Town Clerk.
Personal
To act with integrity at all times, behaviour in line with that of a councillor of the town is to be expected.
To actively pursue the role as Town Crier and to become a member of and abide by the rules/guidelines laid out by the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers (AHGTC), the criers Professional body.
Have no publically aware political persuasion.
Start every cry with “Oyez, Oyez, Oyez” and finish with “God Save the Queen”.
Salary
The Town Council agrees to pay a nominal honorarium as a token of the Council’s gratitude.
The role of Town Crier should not be used as a means of financial gain unless previously agreed with the Town Council.
Insurance
The Council agrees to include your position within its public liability insurance.
