ECD Fundamentals Materials
in
Communications and Mathematical Literacy
NQF Level One.
Over the past 9 months, the Zenex Foundation has made it possible for SAIDE, Woz’obona and COUNT to work in partnership to produce training materials in the Fundamentals for Communications and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level One, in English.
Many ECD Practitioners, studying at Level One and Level Four have experienced great difficulty getting access to learning in the fundamentals. Courses that do exist are usually both expensive and out of context for ECD practitioners. Those courses which have been paid for through the learnerships have been offered at NQF Level Four. Often this level is too difficult for learners. These new Level One materials can be used as a bridge to NQF 4.
You can download the materials here, subject to the conditions and advice that we set out below.

Use of the materials
The materials are aimed specifically at ECD practitioners, giving them a contextualised learning experience. They are available free, as open source downloads from this website, but they are subject to a Creative Commons License. This means that although the copyright for this work is held by the South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE), you may copy, distribute and display the work under certain conditions. These conditions allow for maximum distribution and application. Before you download the materials you should read the conditions attached to the Creative Commons License. Any of these conditions can be waived if you get formal permission from SAIDE.
Trainers for Fundamentals
Zenex and SAIDE are of the strong view that these materials should only be trained by trainers who have an appropriate level of Communications and/or Mathematical Literacy themselves, and that these trainers should receive training in the use of the materials. SAIDE maintains a database of organizations currently equipped to offer this training, which you can view by clicking here. Woz’obona for Communications, and COUNT for Mathematical Literacy, are immediately available to provide this training. As other organizations become available to offer this service, we shall add them to the list of agencies that we believe can offer you this training of trainers.
Accreditation
Before you train this course you need to be sure that your organisation is accredited to train fundamentals. You will have to apply to the ETDP SETA for that accreditation. The accreditation link from this page will take you to a letter which you must download and send with your application for accreditation. You will also need to download the materials and submit them with your application.
