Course description – This course is suitable for those who have completed the BSL Linguistics module (320) of the Signature Level 3 award, and who have completed YSJU’s Advanced BSL Part 1 and 2 modules. This course is designed so that students will be able to use and understand varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.
By the end of the course you should be able to...
- Understand and follow conversations and discussions delivered at normal speed in BSL
- Take part in social interactions in BSL in a range of contexts
- Follow uncomplicated negotiations and instructions in BSL
- Understand news items and documentaries in BSL
Topics covered will include… recognizing introductions, greetings and leave-taking; distinguishing facts from opinion; recognizing time frame of signed accounts; follow and use everyday signed and other non-verbal politeness conventions; follow and use vocabulary and structures linked to enquiries, feelings, humour, instructions and advice; understand and use numerical information; recognize and use major verb forms, negatives, formal and informal registers and standard question forms.
Details of any previous experience or knowledge needed
This course will be taught in sign language, so prior knowledge of BSL in essential. Students will be expected to have passed Signature Level 3 unit 320, and/or YSJU Advanced BSL Part 1 and 3.
Study time outside the classroom and method of assessment
Our language classes are open to students, staff and members of the public. For maximum benefit,it is important toattend regularly, set time aside for homework and independent work between classes, asadvised byyour tutor. All participants will take a practical assessment and complete a portfolio, comprising evidence of work done outside class.
Our tutors are friendly and experienced teachers whose first language is BSL. They will offer guidance on study skills, as well as recommend materials and give you feedback on your progress. Once enrolled, you will have access to the University facilities, such as the library and on-line learning support.

at York St John University to obtain national accreditation
This information relates to an OPTIONAL opportunity to obtain a national accreditation in BSL, built into delivery of our modules in BSL here at York St John.
The Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (‘SIGNATURE’) offer the nationally recognised BSL Level 3 Certificate. This eagerly sought after qualification is now offered at York St John University to all our students who successfully complete all three units in the Advanced BSL course.
Important Note
To achieve the ‘SIGNATURE’ BSL Level 3 Certificate students must attend all three parts of the Advanced course therefore attending York St John University for three semesters and must take and pass all levels of assessments. These assessments will take place alongside the internal assessments that are naturally part of the York St John course.
The BSL Level Three course involves three modules thus:

321 (Understand varied BSL) / 27.5
322 (Use varied BSL) / 27.5
The content of units 320, 321 and 322 will be automatically covered if you attend all three of York St John’s Advanced classes.
Students who attend the course regularly, practice the recommended number of hours and make proper use of tutorial time can expect the pass the assessments.
