We Will Suspend County Vehicle Driving Privileges and May Immediately Terminate an Employee

We will suspend county vehicle driving privileges and may immediately terminate an employee if it isdiscovered that the employee has lost his/her valid driver’s license privileges for any reason, failed toinform their Supervisor, and continued to drive a County vehicle

Class A Violations

An individual who has a Class A violation within the past three (3) years normally receives a suspensionfrom the Department of Motor Vehicles which issued the license. St. JohnsCounty may suspend thedriving privileges for anyone convicted of a Class A violation for a period up to eighteen (18) months. Additionally, these individuals will be required to attend applicable driver improvement program coursesfrom the Northeast Florida Safety Council, at their own expense, before being permitted to drive a countyvehicle.

Class A Violations includes:

• Driving while intoxicated.

• Driving under the influence of drugs.

• Negligent homicide arising out of the use of a motor vehicle (gross negligence).

• Operating a vehicle during a period of suspension or revocation.

• Using a motor vehicle for the commission of a felony.

• Aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.

• Operating a motor vehicle without owner’s authority.

• Permitting an unlicensed person to drive.

• Reckless driving.

• Hit and run driving.

Class B Violations

1) 2 in 3

Any individual who has a combination of two (2) Class B moving violation convictions and/or chargeableaccidents in a three (3) year period will be counseled verbally by their Supervisor.

2) 3 in 3

Any individual who has a combination of three (3) moving violation convictions and/or chargeableaccidents in a three (3) year period will be counseled verbally by their Supervisor and must complete theBasic Driver Improvement course through the Northeast Florida Safety Council (either by physicalattendance or through the on-line course) including showing proof of course completion within 30 days ofnotice. Failure to show proof of attendance with a passing grade may result in the employee beingsuspended from driving county vehicles for a period of at least ninety (90) days.

3) 4 or more in 3

Any individual who has more than three (3) moving violation convictions or three (3) chargeable accidentsor any combination of more than three (3) of the formerly stated violations in a three (3) year period will becounseled verbally by their Supervisor and will complete the Basic Driver Improvement course and theTraffic Collision Avoidance Course through the Northeast Florida Safety Council (either by physicalattendance or through the on-line courses) including showing proof of course completions within 30 days ofnotice. Failure to show proof of attendance with passing grades may result in the employee beingsuspended from driving county vehicles for a period of at least one (1) year.

Class B Violations include:

All moving violations not listed in Class A violations are considered Class B violations, including exceedingposted speed limit.

New Hires / Promotions

Applicants applying for a job which requires driving a county vehicle that have a Class A violationconviction within the past 3 years and/or that have 4 or more Class B violation convictions within the past 3years will not be eligible for employment with the county.
