JOB TITLE: Library Technician –Technical Services

DEPARTMENT: Student Development FLSA: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director, Library Services DATE: 10/21/2011

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provide complex cataloging of library materials according to local and national standards. Provide circulation services and standard reference assistance and instruction in a professional and confidential manner to a diverse population. Manage purchasing for library, especially acquisitions of library materials.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

n  Provide complex cataloging of library materials in various formats in accordance with local and national standards; reconcile cataloging reports as needed.

n  Provide circulation services and standard reference assistance and instruction in a professional and confidential manner to a diverse population.

n  Manage purchasing for library, working in conjunction with outside vendors and ECC business office.

n  Process and determine method of disposal for discarded library materials:

- Manage the Friends of the Library Book Sales and on-going Book Sale Cart

- Manage the Better World Books project

n  Organize, catalog and maintain special and off-campus library collections such as the Nursing Multimedia Collection and Rolla Nursing Collection.

n  Assist with planning and development of cataloging policies and procedures.

n  In the absence of other library staff members, assume responsibility of library.

n  Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

n  Maintain inventory of technical services supplies.

n  Responsible for Technical Services operations of the Library when professional staff are absent.

n  Adjustment of hours involving evening and/or weekend work may be required.

n  Perform other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

n  Knowledge of department and college policies, procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work related questions; and/or interpret and apply these guidelines correctly in various situations.

n  Basic higher education knowledge in a wide range of areas to assist patrons with inquiries

n  Excellent computer skills including internet searching skills

n  Knowledge of job-related specialized programs; Millennium Integrated Library System, OCLC Firstsearch, OCLC Connexion Client, Microsoft Office programs, Datatel.

n  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

n  Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees.

n  Strong administrative skills with an appreciation for accuracy and attention to detail.

n  Ability to make routine work decisions independently and perform duties using perceptive judgment and discretion.

n  Excellent customer service skills.

n  Ability to learn new technologies and software as it pertains to Library and patron needs.

n  Skill to use active listening techniques to better assist patron inquiries.

n  Ability to be self-motivating, prioritizing tasks and moving smoothly from one to another as situations require.

n  Ability to deal with frequent interruptions in busy office setting.

n  Basic office skills such as filing, operating telephones, shredding, duplicating, etc.

n  Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification system, LC Subject Headings, and other library related terminology and concepts.

n  Knowledge of AACR2 and MARC.

n  Follow complex technical instructions, solve technical problems, or disseminate information regarding policies and procedures; may compose unique reports or analysis; and/or provide extensive customer service to internal or external customers.

n  Communicate information to guide or assist people; may give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

DECISION-MAKING and ANALYTICAL SKILLS:

n  May be responsible for actions of others, requiring almost constant decisions affecting co-workers, crime victims, patients, customers, clients, or others in the general public. Perform specialized technical work involving data collection, evaluation, analysis, and troubleshooting, or reports on operations and activities of a department, or performs general coordination of individual or departmental activities.

n  Adhere to department and college policies, procedures, and practices.

n  Perform job duties in a safe and efficient manner.

EQUIPMENT/SOFTWARE:

n  Use office machines such as telephones, fax machines, copiers or calculators.

n  Use computers for data entry, word processing; use Microsoft XP, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

n  Knowledge of job-related specialized programs; Millennium Integrated Library System, OCLC Firstsearch, OCLC Connexion Client.

WORKING CONDITIONS - the following physical conditions and hazards may be encountered in this position:

n  The position is in an indoor environment with a moderate noise level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

§  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.

§  The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds; and rarely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

§  The position may also require close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
