Descendants of John Carter

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN2 CARTER (JOHN1)1 was born January 02, 1813 in KY, and died February 27, 1901 in Putnam County IN. He married (1) ELIZA NUTTERFIELD1 Bet. 1822 - 1828 in KY2, daughter of GEORGE NUTTERFIELD and NANCY MCWILLIAMS. She was born July 26, 1810 in Shelby county KY, and died May 02, 1866 in Putnam County IN. He married (2) ANN SINCLAIR November 14, 1867 in Putnam county IN. She was born August 01, 1825, and died March 02, 1896 in Putnam county IN.

Notes for JOHN CARTER:

John Carter Jr was born in Ky , the county is unknown but thought to be either Nelson or Shelby County KY

There is some reason to believe that there was a prior marriage for Eliza Nutterfee to Andrew Pittman.

Statements were made by Ludwell their son that Margaret was a half sister, her being one of the children born in Kentucky.

The last child born in KY was in 1833, sometime between 1833 and 1835 they migrated to Owen County IN.They settled within 5 miles of the present day Mannan Cemetery on the Owen/Putnam County Line.

Sometime after 1850 he moved 1/4 mile down the road to Putnam County and lived the rest of his life there. Eliza died there in 1866.The route they took and stops they may have made en route to IN are a mystery as are the true surname of Eliza. The family bible records are the source for the childrens births and marriages.

John married a second time after Eliza's death to Ann Sinclair b. 8-1-1825 m. 11-14-1867 and Ann died 3-21-1896. John died 2-27-1901.

To get to the old homeplace go to Mannan Cemetery, go west to first road turn left go to cross roads turn right go to next road with sign to Alaska turn right road will curve around his property right before the first curve.

The 1860 Owen county census lists his birth place as Ky.

In this census, the oldest child still unmarried and at home is John.

The 1870 Putnam census shows a female by the name of Ann living in the household. I

suppose this is his second wife, but she is simply listed as house keeper.

Morris was the only child listed as still at home.

Notes for ELIZA NUTTERFIELD:

Eliza believed to be Nutterfee. It is thought her parents may be George Nutterfield and her mother Nancy Williams and that her mother may have lived next to them in Owen County about 1850.

Eliza died 5-2-1866 at the age of 56, not surprising after giving birth to 13 children,She endured the death of 3 of her children, 2 of them less then 1 year old.

It is believed that she had a brother Lott living in Martin Co, IN and married to a Sarah Micheltree. They may have stopped there en route to Owen county.

There is data to support the fact that Elizabeth Nutterfee married Andrew Pittman in 1822, her parents George Nutterfield and Nancy gave permission may 23, and she was married on the same day. This would mean that the first four children were fathered by Pittman instead of John Carter.

Whether Andrew Pittman died and she at that time married John Carter is unknown we do know that she married John Carter prior to 1835 and remained with him till her death in 1866.

Notes for JOHN R. MANNAN:

MORGAN COUNTY

ADAMS TOWNSHIP

PAGE 306

JOHN R. MANNAN, general merchant, was born in Owen County, Ind.,

January 16, 1859, and is a son of William C. and Margaret E. (Carter)

Mannan, the former a native of Morgan and the latter of Owen County, Ind.

Both were of English, Irish and German descent. William C. Mannan re-

ceived a good education at the common schools of his native county, and

also attended Asbury University, of Greencastle, Ind., for a time. At the

age of nineteen, he left home; followed various pursuits for some seven

years. He was married in 1856, and soon after bought wild land in Ashland

Township, Morgan Co., Ind., where he improved the farm upon which he

still resides. He is a member of the Baptist Church and of the Patrons of

Husbandry. John R. Mannan, the subject of our sketch, received a good

common school education, and was employed on his father's farm until he

was twenty-one years old. He then taught school during the fall and winter

in his native county for three years, being employed on a farm during the sum-

mer season. He clerked in a general store at Eminence for one year. In

March, 1883, he bought this store in company with Mrs. H. H. Nicholas.

Mr. Mannan was married, September 7, 1880, to Laura M. Nicholas, a

native of Clay County, Ind. Two sons have blessed their union. Mr.

Mannan is a member of Eminence Lodge, No. 317, I. O. O. F., of which

lodge he is at present V. G. In politics, he is a Democrat.

ii.GEORGE MANNAN, b. Unknown.

5. CALVIN A3 CARTER (JOHN2, JOHN1)9 was born August 24, 1835 in Owen county IN, and died September 22, 1865 in Owen county IN. He married ROSELLA BALDON9 August 03, 1853 in Owen county IN, daughter of MCKINNEY BALDWIN and MARY MURPHY. She was born February 10, 1833 in Owen county IN, and died December 03, 1920 in Harrison twp, Owen county IN.

Notes for CALVIN A CARTER:

Calvin died as a result of injuries suffered in a train wreck on the way home from Shiloh/Nashville Tennessee on September 22-1865.

He was the first child of his parents to be born in Indiana.

In the documents of his service enlistment he is described as being 5 foot 9 inches tall and blue eyes, and brown hair and fair complexion, Calvin was mustered into the service by Captain Thompson of the US Army in February 21, 1865 in Terre Haute, IN

Information regarding military service from the actual war records and muster sheets.

His Tombstone is located near the southeast corner of the cemetery, in the

4th row of tombstones. There is a sinkhole south of the grave and one grave

marker base next to his which lies between his grave and the sinkhole. The

stone is gone from the grave marker base next to his grave, but this is

probably the grave of his mother, Elizabeth Nutterfee Carter, who is buried in

the same row according to the cemetery records. I believe one of the twins died

when about 2 years old. That child may be buried in this same row of graves.

After being sworn in Terre Haute, he went home for some reason. His company was

sent to Mississippi or Alabama but didn't get there until a few days after

the war was over. Their only action was to accept the surrender

of Confederate General Wheeler. After he returned to camp he was being

sent to his outfit in the south when he was in a train wreck a died of

injuries sustained in the wreck. He had the dubious honor of being the only

one in his outfit to be injured in the service.)

2-15-1865-enlisted at Terre Haute

From the Application for pension filed by Grandma Carter: He was in Company B,

149th Reg't. Indiana Volunteers. I think he was also listed somewhere as being

in Company C or D. According to information in the Owen County Cemetery Record

Book, he was in Co. I of the 149th Ind Inf. This is the information

on his tomb stone in the Combs Cem.

According to information from Dick Carter, he was considered AWOL from the

army from the time of the train wreck until 22 Apr 1870. This was corrected

when Grandma Carter petitioned the Adjutant General. Dick said his back was

broken when he was hit by a keg of nails when the train wrecked and later died

at home on convalescent leave and consequently didn't report back to his outfit

and was considered AWOL.

9-12-1865-AWOL from Pulaski TN

He was a blacksmith in the Army and died of injuries when hit in back by a barrel of nails and broke his back.

Rosella is possibly the person to have filled out the statistics pages of the Carter Family Bible

!NOTE: In the Carter Bible there is a note of a death of a Mary Ann Baldon in

June 10, 1854. She must have been a sister to Rosellah.

The 1880 census shows Rosselah living with Ira A Baldon, 20

years old, who is listed as her son. He is listed as having been born in Iowa

and his father was born in Indiana and his mother in Michigan. I think he is

probably her grandson or nephew. There was a teacher in Harrison Twp by the

name of Ira Baldon during the late 1800's.

Her son John is buried next to her at Mannan and shares the same headstone.

Her grave is next to the road and 2nd row from the east edge of the cemetery.

The grave in the first row from the east and located directly east of grandma

Carter's grave is Millie Carter, wife of George M. Carter. She was born in

1856 and died in 1904. She is buried in the same lot as an infant Daughter who

died in 1894.

Notes for ELIZABETH JANE CARTER:

!NOTE: In the 1910 census, Ira and Elva are listed as the only children at

home. She married Ham Secrest later. I don't know where she is buried as her

name is on John Truax's Tombstone, but the date is not cut in. She is also not

listed on the tome stone of Ham Secrest, but I believe Mom and Dad says she was

buried with him. Ham (A.H.) Secrest has a monument in about the same row as

the Lockharts. His first wife is buried there but the date of his death is

not cut into the stone. Her name, according to the cemetery book,

was Clara Lockhart, and she was born in 1850 and died in 1901. It would be

interesting to find out what Lockhart family she was from. There were Lockhart

children in the Lopossa School in the late 1800's so there were other

Lockharts in the area. Mom and dad would occasional remark about the fact

that Grandma Truax was not buried with her first husband, but I don't

remember them saying that Ham was not buried with his first wife either.

10-4-1999--

In regards to Eliza Jane's burial- her date is not carved into stone of John Truax although she is listed on the stone and she is listed under her married name she had AFTER the death of John. If this was carved at his death how would this be known?

Notes for JOHN TRUAX:

Some said that he went crazy before he died. For one thing he would

walk around in the cow pasture mooing at the cows. Charles Lockhart said he was eccentric;

Mary Lockhart said he was mad as a hatter.
