Creating a Turnitin submission point
How to add a Turnitin submission sitetoa duo course
1
Introduction
Turnitin allows for student submissions to be checked for originality and to be marked online.Turnitin submission points are links that students follow to submit their assessments and view their online marks and feedback. They must be created afresh each academic year.
Before creating a submission point
ATurnitin submission point can be created in any content area in duo. However, it is recommended that they sit within the Assessment area (or equivalent) of the duo site. This ensures consistency across module sites and keeps all assessment-related materials in one place.
Creating the submission point
- Go to the duo course content area (e.g. ‘Assessments’ section) and make sure that Edit Mode is ON.
- From theAssessments drop-down list, clickTurnitin Assignment.
- On the ‘Select your assignment type’ screen, leave Paper Assignment ticked.
- Click Next Step.
- Enter an Assignment title.
- Enter a Point value if required for online marking.
Tip: Do not enter 0 (zero) as a point value; leave this blank if not entering marks.
- Change the Start date (when students will be able to start submitting work) if required.
- Set the Due date for submissions.
Tip: You will be able to choose whether students can submit after the deadline under ‘Optional Properties (explained below).
Tip: Work submitted within a few minutes of the deadline may appear as late due to Turnitin processing time.
- Set the Post date.
IMPORTANT:The post date determines when the marks are sent to the Grade Centre, and thus when they are released to students. For anonymous submissions, the post date also determines when student names will be visible. The post datecannotbe changed after it has passed.
- Choose a file type option:
- Allow only file types that Turnitin can check for similarity: this is for files that contain text (at least 20 words) and so can be used to generate a Similarity Report.
- Allow any file type: use this option if you don’t need similarity checking, but have another reason to use Turnitin (e.g. to use Feedback Studio for marking).
Tip: Image files are shown on the screen and can be marked using Feedback Studio functions; if files cannot be shown on screen you will need to download them for viewing, but can still leave comments and use a rubric to mark the work via Feedback Studio.
- Click Optional Settings.
- Enter any special instructions or departmental statements (e.g. resubmission policy, originality declaration, etc.).
Tip: There is a limit of 1,000 characters. No text formatting or paragraph breaks will appear to students.
- Choose from the other options depending on what you require:
Option
/Recommended setting
/Notes
Allow submissions after the due date? / YES / This is University policy—see the L&T Handbook for details. If a submission is late, the submission date will be red in the Turnitin Inbox.
Generate Similarity Reports for submissions? / YES / The originality report will identify student collusion within a submission, but cannot determine who copied whom.
If you are not using Turnitin for similarity checking (e.g. for non-text submissions), tick NO.
Generate Similarity Report for student submission / Choose immediately (can overwrite reports until due date) / This allows students to resubmit until the deadline, but not after.
To prevent students from resubmitting, choose ‘immediately first report is final’. A staff member will then need to delete any submissions uploaded in error BUT the original will remain in the Turnitinsimilarity checking repository.
Exclude bibliographic materials from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment? / NO / This setting cannot be changed after the first file is submitted.
It is generally preferable to choose to hide bibliographic matches when viewing the submissionsrather than here.
Ticking YES means that Turnitin will try to determine which part of the submission is the bibliography, which may not be accurate. If more than 15% of the whole submission is identified as bibliography, an exclamation mark will appear next to the submission title in the Turnitin Inbox.
Exclude quoted materials from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment? / NO / This setting cannot be changed after the first file is submitted.
It is generally preferable to choose to hide quoted matches when viewing the submissionsrather than here.
Exclude small sources? / NO / This setting cannot be changed after the first file is submitted.
It is generally preferable to choose to hide smallsources when viewing the submissionsrather than here.
If choosing to exclude small matches, it is recommended that you use Word Count (e.g. exclude matches up to 5 words) rather than percentage.
Allow students to see Similarity Reports? / NO
/ If you want students to see their similarlity reports (e.g. for formative purposes to discuss academic integrity), be sure to explain what the reports mean and how to read them.
Reveal grades to students only on post date? / YES / Selecting NO allows students to see their marks IMMEDIATELY after they are entered, regardless of the post date.
If you want students to see their marks all at the same time, but before the post date, you can tick NO here and hide the associated Grade Centre column until you wish the marks to be released.
Enable anonymous marking? / Dependent on departmental policy (see the L&T Handbook) / This setting cannot be changed after the first file is submitted.
If ticking YES:
you will not be able to see who has submitted until anonymity is turned off, but you can email non-submitters
anonymity will be turned off automatically on the post date
Submit papers to: / Choosestandard paper repository / standard paper repository: files are stored in the Turnitin database
institution paper repository:files are stored in an area reserved for Durham University only and are not available to other institutions; choose this option if confidential material may be included in the submitted papers
student’s choice of repository: we strongly recommend not using this setting
no repository: the similarity report is generated but the file is not stored in the Turnitin database at all
Search options / Tick all / This applies to assignments with similarity checking.
Attach a rubric/form to this assignment / Department/lecturer choice / See Turnitin Guides for Staff for full details on rubrics and forms.
Students will be able to see the rubric/form at the Turnitin submission point.
Would you like to save these options…? / User choice / Tick this box to save the settings above for Turnitin submission points you create in the future.
It is recommended that you check the settings every time you create a new submission.
- Click Submit.
- Click OK.
- TheTurnitin submission link will now appear on the duo site.
Tip: To confirm whether students will see their marks on the post date, check whether the column for this assignment is visible or hidden in the Grade Centre. You may also want to hide any ‘Total’ columns in the Grade Centre as this may not give an accurate calculation of the student’s module mark.
